'14 AL LB Gavin Bryant (UT Signee 2/5/14)

Will be the best defensive player from this class when it's all said & done. No knock on TK, Gaulden & Bates who I think will all be studs.

Just something about Bryant's film makes me have super high expectations for him. He's explosive, quick & can lay the wood. Everything you need at the LB spot.

“I’m very excited and then nervous. I ain’t never been around this many people going to college,” said Bryant, who was ranked by 247Sports as the nation’s No. 242 overall prospect and No. 10 inside linebacker in the 2014 class.

“I feel like I made one of the best decisions in the world, coming to an SEC school.”

The 6-foot-1.5, 230-pound Bryant said he spent most of his final semester of high school focusing on his academics to ensure that he would be able to enroll at Tennessee this summer, and he’s relieved know he has completed the work he needed to do in the classroom.

“I had to do some schoolwork,” he said. “It was pretty much under control all semester. I worked hard.”

With that behind him, Bryant said he’s looking forward to learning Tennessee’s defensive playbook and getting into the weight room this summer to prepare himself for the physical challenges that come with playing in the SEC.

“Really, I’ve been working, but I haven’t been working like I should. I really came a couple days early so I could work out with a couple of guys,” Bryant said.

“I’m really trying to get everything up — running, stamina and weights.”

Bryant said Tennessee’s coaches haven’t told him exactly which position he will be playing when the Vols begin preseason camp in August, but he believes he’s “going to work as a Mike (linebacker) from Day One.”

Tennessee senior middle linebacker A.J. Johnson is expected to start at that position this season, and Bryant said he’s looking forward to learning from Johnson.

“I’m kind of going to look up to (Johnson) and then go from there and work my way onto the field,” Bryant said. “Ain’t no way around it, because he’s elite and he’s headed to the league next year. He’s, like, one of the top linebackers in the country.”

But Bryant said he still believes he’s capable of contributing in some form or fashion as a true freshman.

“I know it’s going to be hard, but if you’re a baller, you’re just a baller,” he said. “And I call myself a baller, but I haven’t ever been on that level yet in college. I know I was a baller in high school, so I’m just going to look at it like it’s high school and just go in trying to ball.”

Ballers jus gon ball.
