"I think it's pretty good," Payne said of the family relations. "My granddad goes down a lot. I think he's going to move down there [East Tennessee] after he retires. That's awesome. Sunday dinners and all that."
First-year Tennessee coach Butch Jones made Payne a high priority. "I took a lot of visits to a lot of different schools but when I went to Tennessee, I just fell in love with everything going on down there," Payne said. "Coach Jones has a lot going on and a lot in store for these coming years."
Aside from the coaches, Payne said he also grew fond of Tennessee's players. He also cited the warm weather during his visit as a positive for picking the Vols.
In particular, Tabor has shown strong interest in Tennessee. "I'm going to try to get him," Payne said. "I'm definitely going to try to get him. He's got other schools and whatever school he picks I know he's going to do well ... We're pretty close. I see him every day. We talk all about recruiting and colleges."
