After slipping last year in the Washington, D.C.-Baltimore area, the Volunteers showed they can be successful there by landing ESPN Watch List cornerback D'Andre Payne from Washington Friendship. Tennessee didn't land a single signee in the 2013 class from the area. That was a bit surprising, considering former Tennessee coach Derek Dooley hired away Alabama linebackers coach Sal Sunseri to be the Vols' defensive coordinator in January 2012. Sunseri has vast ties in the areas surrounding the nation's capital. He landed several top prospects from region while coaching for the Crimson Tide [Cyrus Jones and Cyrus Kouandijo].
Perhaps that was because he was saddled with defensive coordinator duties, Sunseri had no success in the East region during his one season at Tennessee. However, the focus on coordinating didn't help. Tennessee was last in the SEC under Sunseri and No. 107 in the nation in total defense.
Previous coaches at Tennessee seemed to have set the table for Sunseri and Tennessee to have success recruiting D.C. and Baltimore. Former linebacker coach Peter Sirmon made strong inroads in the area before leaving Knoxville for a similar position with the Washington Huskies.
With low-fare bus lines between the two cities and Knoxville, distance shouldn't be as much of a concern. For those willing to spend more cash, there are also direct flights from Knoxville to Baltimore.
Tennessee assistant coach Tommy Thigpen will be Tennessee's point man at those schools. Payne has repeatedly said that his relationship with the linebackers coach was key in his decision. Of course, Thigpen can't speak about specific prospects like Payne, as per NCAA rules. For now, he can let his commitments do the talking -- unlike some of Tennessee's previous coaches.
