Bates impresses
After an up-and-down first day, Monday was a different story for the Team Nitro linebackers, especially Tennessee commit Dillon Bates (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra Beach). Bates, the No. 4 outside linebacker in the ESPN 300, made would-be blockers look silly with his ability to shed blocks and find the ball carrier. And when he found the running backs, he made sure they were aware he was there. ((

"The first day was all install, and we were just trying to get everything set for the week and just trying to get our mind ready for the week," Bates said. "We really were more in reaction mode versus attack mode. This morning we had a really great meeting, ran through some things we weren't getting yesterday, made some changes to things and it just really clicked for everybody. It just felt kind of natural for me."

Ohio State linebacker commit Raekwon McMillan (Hinesville, Ga./Liberty County) was a force again, but Bates believes all of his team's linebackers are capable of big things and will get even better as the week moves on.((

"All of us are definitely very fast, and you have a bunch of guys like McMillan who can plug holes," Bates said. "We are all-around sound. With the great coaches we have, we'll definitely be making plays."

Edit : POA beat me to it

"9. LB DILLON BATES, PONTE VEDRA (FLA.)
Bates also continued playing very well on the second day of practice. The Tennessee commit was always in the right place at the right time. He is very good in pursuit and is very fast to the outside to turn the play back to the inside. Bates also had a few more tackles for loss."

If he continues to have great practices and has a great game I think he gets a 5th star. That's why rivals waits to do a final ranking, they like to bump kids who ball out at these all star games.

Yeah I believe that is how it happened with Bell last year. Bates is a better player though. Obviously.

It's fun to watch a kid with talent, but when one has the brain, instincts and talent combined, its special to watch.

Very premature I know, but reminds me in a way of a defensive Peyton Manning, if that makes sense!?

Bates will be special IMO.

I agree. Bates is extremely talented, but a 5th star - really folks? Maybe if he was committed to Alabama.

its possible. hes currently ranked 61st. arent there around 35 5*s each year? Hes been outperforming a lot of the kids ranked higher than him. Hes been a top 10 performer both days. He should move up in the Rivals100. And although he could get his 5th, im with you, i dont think it will

It's not really that big of a jump from his current ranking. I'll bet you, if not Bates, there will be someone ranked similarly that ends up with a 5th star after having a great all star game. Happens every year.

Naturally I'm jaded about such things. Rivals has made me that way. But we all know Bates can shine. I'm ready to see him in action vs the best.
