'14 FL LB Dillon Bates (UT Signee 2/5/14)

A big speedy, instinctual outside linebacker that's gonna start immediately. Giddy. Just think about the experience he'll have as a senior.

Wow! He really may just win a starting spot, all he lacked was the weight it seems. Maybe that's why we are ok moving Maggitt to DE full time.

Let's hope not. True frosh winning starting spots isn't always a good thing. They will need him for sure, but UT will be playing AJ and JRM most of the time as the only LBs on the field. I can just about bet the base D becomes nickel.

But it isn't always bad when they're elite talent in the first place....

Also, changed "frosh" to "freshmen". I have no idea what a "frosh" is.

It would be tough for him to unseat JRM in his first season with just the summer to work with the team I would think. But maybe when we go to a 4-2 with a nickel JRM could slide over to nickel and Bates play the other LB? With his safety background I would think JRM would be ok there.

Speaking of JRM... How has he been progressing? I know he was pretty highly touted coming out of HS.

He is on track to start at will, and I think he could be a very good one. Reminds me of the speedy, yet slightly undersized backers that Chief had so much success with when he was here.

Spot on.. Most posters think we should field our entire starting offense and Defense with true freshman each year. Also, if they do. Atleast contribute by their sophomore year they are labeled a bust or over recruited...

True freshman winning a starting spot is not always a bad thing either.

Congratulations. You had no idea what a "frosh" was, but you guessed right. For a hundred years, frosh was understood to mean freshman.

Does Utah State run a spread? Wondering who will be starting that first game with AJ and JRM if we come out in a 4-3.

Where was AJ talking about him? What did he say?

I don't think JRM is as "speedy" as some think he is. In the O and W game on Worley's long run JRM is trailing behind him and losing ground on WORLEY. Also when he was coming out of H.S. He ran a 4.8 40 as a 198 pound safety prospect.
IMO Bates would be better in coverage. iirc he was rated as the best olb in coverage in the whole class of 2014. He also ran a 4.51 40 at the opening last year.

Watch again. JRM is loafing because he thinks Coleman is going to make the tackle. Coleman does make the tackle, but it's not because JRM got outrun by Worley. He's just loafing on the play.

He is just loafing on that play because he thinks the CB will make the tackle.

EDIT: got nashvol'd

He was one hell of a running back in high school. He can move.
