Also very very well spoken young man. Hard to believe he's only a freshman. Excited to see him ball out

I think this was the most impressive thing about all of the freshmen who spoke today. They were very well spoken and seemed mature for their age. Dillon was especially impressive, as was TK Jr and Vic.

These guys want to win, not just for themselves, but for Tennessee. That is AWESOME and it is something that's been lost in translation around here for the last few years.

He was one hell of a running back in high school. He can move.

I agree he looked great on special teams last year. Maybe he's faster than his #'s suggest. I just don't know if he's an elite LB and IMO Bates can be really special. It's great to have them both and see who comes out on top.

They may see the field together in speed or qb rush formations. maybe vereen on one side, maggit with his hand in the dirt on the other and bates and jrm on the outsides at backer. could be nasty.

Watch again. JRM is loafing because he thinks Coleman is going to make the tackle. Coleman does make the tackle, but it's not because JRM got outrun by Worley. He's just loafing on the play.

Not a good sign if he is loafing on any play. That is how you give up big plays and lose ball games.

I believe Bates will start at some point this year. I think he may be a starter in the 4-3 base as early as game one. Admittedly, starting freshmen can be nerve wracking and it is best to have talented upperclassmen ready to start, but freshmen start for top teams in the country these days, even at Bama, FSU, etc. I think Bates is talented enough to be a player that starts as a freshman almost anywhere. In addition, with Dooley's recruiting, LB is an area where we are particularly weak. In sum, I'm not sure Bates would start for Bama, FSU, etc., right now--though I think he would have a shot based on his size, athleticism, strength, and purported knowledge of the position--but our depth chart indicates he will be in the two deep at minimum from game one on. We are another two classes from bringing in players like Bates and having the luxury of redshirting him behind other similarly talented but more experienced players. I just hope he's as talented and ready as we think and the recruiting services indicated.

I don't think JRM is as "speedy" as some think he is. In the O and W game on Worley's long run JRM is trailing behind him and losing ground on WORLEY. Also when he was coming out of H.S. He ran a 4.8 40 as a 198 pound safety prospect.
IMO Bates would be better in coverage. iirc he was rated as the best olb in coverage in the whole class of 2014. He also ran a 4.51 40 at the opening last year.

nobody thinks he is really "speedy" but i would wager that as hes matured hes more like a mid 4.6 type guy. The thing about Maybin thats special is he has a knack about being around the football. he makes plays. he wont be running the 40 too much in a game so who cares what his 40 is. he moves around quicker, moves well laterally and he plays faster than whatever his 40 was 2-3 yrs ago.

It was an intersquad scrimmage lol let me know how many plays you saw him loafing in games last year?

im with ya man. that guy has no clue but this is what our fans do. they get pumped when someone signs and then they give that player one year to be an all american before they start bashing them. We give our players no time to develop. JRM was one of the best special teams players in the league last yr as a true freshman. He will be hard to keep off the field. Next yr if some posters dont think Bates is living up to the billing they will start predicting that he loses his job too. After 1 season we will start hearing about how he is recruited over. Just like people say about JRM, Obrien, and Croom. All three have a role for this team and they are all three either a true sophomore or a redshirt sophomore.

Like I said just my opinion but I still think Bates will be the better LB of the two. I never said JRM was a bad player or a bust. JRM had a fantastic freshman year IMO.

They'll both play at the same time. I think Bates will start at the other olb position.

Yep. If there's nothing to "be worried" about we make stuff up to worry about lol

If Bates really is up to 230 pounds then he already weighs more than JRM. That's SEC-ready size. He could very well see some time as the 3rd OLB if Maggitt is playing end this year. I think it's also of worth to note that the typical holdup for freshmen isn't so much the physical adjustment, but the mental one - the speed of the game. If there's anyone in that class who's got the mental preparation (from his dad) and football IQ to play early, it's Bates.

Yeah he totally should have caught up from behind and horse-collated our starting quarterback in a scrimmage.

Penalty for horse collar tackle is 15yds... A horse-collated tackle sounds much worse, maybe 15 yds and a game suspension? :)

Had to do it JC, especially since one word in a contract or law can make a huge difference :)

I assume that you were auto-corrected, but still made me laugh :salute:

Imo you dont redshirt players like bates at any program unless there happened to be a medical reason. That is a vanderbilt mentality because they need 5th year seniors to make up for a lack of talent. The talent we are bringing in is more likely to be moving to the next level after 3 years than it is to be staying 5 years. Not saying nobody will redshirt, but it will not be guys like Bates, Hurd, Malone etc.

Thank so much for that. One of the best laughs I've had in a while.
