'14 JUCO LB Chris Weatherd (UT Signee 2/5/14)

He looks pretty big in the latest picture that I've seen. He has a good month of lifting and conditioning to get in shape. Which I'm sure he has been working hard before he got here, so I'm thinking he has a really good year. Forces a couple fumbles, 6 sacks and 2 INTs from OLB/DE.

I'd love to see those numbers, but I doubt it. He'll likely be a situational player and is a bit behind the curve do to showing up late. Early on we'll probably just throw him in on passing situations and sort of unleash him to get after the QB.

Just for perspective, 6 sacks and 2 ints would be more sacks than any single player on our team had last season and have him 2nd for ints behind Randolph (tied with Sutton).

That doesn't mean he can't have an impact, though. Hurries as QB hits are very overlooked stats.

I would be (very) pleasantly surprised if Weatherd has a substantial impact this year. Aside from his late arrival on campus, he wasn't even one of Trinity Valley's best defenders last season. He was 22nd in total tackles (24), tied for 12th in TFL (4), and tied for 9th in sacks (2).

Weatherd has outstanding size & speed but that hasn't yet translated into stellar production on the field. He did very little as a freshman LB at TVCC (4 tackles in 8 games) and his senior stats at Creekview HS were modest for a LB.

So while I don't see him making a big splash this fall, I'd love to see him be a solid backup and then hopefully start next year.

Depth. We need depth.

Weatherd provides some veteran depth at (maybe) two positions. He should be able to contribute when called upon but I don't see him being an instant game changer. His past history just doesn't justify that assessment. If he becomes more than that, we got a bonus.

He wasn't brought in to be depth. He may not win the starting job, but he will no doubt be in serious competition to be a starter.

There's two problems with this iyam. I'm almost positive he missed games last year, so that skewed those stats.

Second, if he doesn't start this year, he won't next year. AJ is the only senior, so say JRM and Bates start at OLB, we will need a MLB to start. It will likely be Bynum/Bryant/Cherry.

JMO of course

I believe every scholarship player on this team is in serious competition to be a starter. Seriously. The coaches are looking for playmakers at every position. It's got to be an exciting time for the players. Everybody's got a shot.

My comments about Weatherd are responding to other posters commenting about him being a game-changer. He may be --- but his past history just doesn't show it.

I wouldn't look into JUCO stats very much. There is a reason Weatherd was being pursued heavily by Tennessee, Oklahoma, Alabama, Auburn and Texas A&M and no other Trinity Valley player is going to be playing at a D1 school this year.

Only played a few games IIRC and sat out the rest of the season with an injury. I remember he was able to visit during his season because he wasnt able to play. Usually JUCOs can only visit for a game when they have a bye week

I understand what you're saying but it would be extremely unusual for a juco player to be more productive in the SEC than he was against juco competition, and Weatherd simply wasn't that productive either year at TVCC.

I'm well aware of his ranking and I know he had offers from some top-tier programs, but I think those were based on his physical abilities and potential rather than his on-the-field accomplishments. And while he did miss 4 games last season, he was still just 18th on the team in tackles per game.

BTW, nine TVCC players signed with BCS schools last fall, including DE Jhaustin Thomas (South Carolina) and DB D'Nerius Antoine (Oklahoma State).

I'm not trying to slight Weatherd's ability to eventually contribute at UT, but I think those who are expecting/hoping him to have a huge impact this fall are going to be disappointed. I'm still glad we signed him and was very pleased when I found out he finally made it to Knoxville, as I believe he's one of many newcomers who will help provide us w/ the kind of quality depth we've been missing for too long.

Maybe his competition knew he was so good and designed plays away from him. They won't have that luxury here.

Neither of those players will be playing D1 this year.

Chris is a very big LB. Thing is, he looks like one too.
