'14 KY DT Matt Elam

I love that gif

:the_finger:

And they are no good anyway, anybody with football IQ can see that the only reason we are recruiting them are there name and i rather have a DT than a LB or DB.
:tease2:
Hit the wrong button so you do not get a like for this post. We need DL, OL, and the Legacies Evan and Elliot Berry brothers. Matt would be a great addition to this class!

Seems to me that Coach Strip had a plan when he came to UT, and that plan got amended. Same scheme, just going up a size in personnel.

And it’s not like they haven’t had big guys before. In 2010-11 they had Wolfe and Hughes, both in the 300-lbs. range. In 2012 they were using a couple of 270ish-lbs, guys for the most part.

Thing is, ain’t nobody ever seen anything like Daniel McCullers. And now that Coach Strip has had his greedy paws on his tape and they see just how fast the kids can move these days. I commented earlier in this thread about just how nimble this kid is for a guy that size. Pretty much the same thing that happens to other teams when they have to deal with Big Dan.

I’m thinking that they aren’t confident they can flip Lamlin, so they’re going after some frosh (for now).

Glad to see Stripling make this subtle adjustment in his style. We've all seen coaches stick to their belief system come hell or high water even if it cost them their job.

A smaller quick DT in this league is every bit of 290+.....that's just how it is. The 270 DT, that's where we've been the past 5 years and you see where it got us. I still think once he gets his hand on some SEC talent that Stripling is gonna show he's one of the best DL coaches in America. This Elam kid might not have been tops on our board, but with good coaching he'll be a good player.

Not sold on this guy yet.

Me either. I've just never been huge on prospects from KY for whatever reason. Fugate rushed for 3k yards.. 3k and he doesn't even play offense here. Not saying that's the measuring stick, I'm just not that impressed with him given other guys we are in on. I'd take the other 4 that we have been talking about before Elam any day.

Maybe that is the plan with Elam. Maybe that is why they waited till now to offer. Humphreys, Barnett, Lambert, Williams, and Lamin all have mentioned deciding in Aug. A late July offer to Elam allows the staff to make it look like they came in before the others announce and are not just offering him in case they miss on others. UT will have to spend a little time recruiting Matt before he would pick them. Good chance all those I mentioned announcing in Aug do so and the UT coaches then know where they stand. If they miss on several of them they just continue to go after Elam. If they get 2-3 of their targets they could just say we are all full and the Elam talk is done. JMO

I like where your heads at on this one. I think offering and slow playing a couple of other prospects that play the same position might light a fire under some of the kids arses.. and then if they fall through, we'll have secondary options. With everyone jumping on so early this year it will be fun to see how the landscape changes once these kids put pads on for their senior year.

Fugate was on the way to being an NFL FB/H-back. Dooley moved him to LB and ruined his career. And that's exactly what happened with that deal.

I know, I was super pumped when he came here. Dooley is the gift that doesn't know how to stop giving eh?

Do you remember our numbers at LB last year?

I don't think they were the best. Still can't agree with moving Fugate. It had more to do with him making simple rookie mistakes at UGA than it did adding to LB depth IMO. He got in Dooley's doghouse and Dooley decided to make him a scout team LB instead of starting H-back. Kinda like he made Teague the leagues worst DB instead of leaving him as a competent WR. Or kinda like he moved Neal to WR instead of just plugging in the freshman Arnett. And if he never moved Teague from WR the hole he attempted to fill with Neal would never have been there.

I agree Fugate hasn't played up to expectations, but he is an absolute terror on special teams.
I agree and tbere is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Fugate is a Volunteer and I was not trying to belittle him by any means.

Fugate never got the chance to improve from being a "soft" blocker to a better one. He went through the Dools garbage, changing coaches, changing systems, changing positions, etc. and got lost in the process. But this stuff goes on everywhere and went on with Fulmer and Majors as well. Doesn't make it right and it is our loss as well as his.

Perfect example: Austin Johnson. Was a holy terror as a LB in HS. They run him at second team FB that means next to nothing in the offense they ran until they figure out he can help them at LB when they got thin on D. One season to acclimate in which he plays a lot and then starts his senior year. What would have happened if he had been a Mike or Sam his entire time at UT? Stupid. That's all you can say.

If someone gets an offer from Alabama and they live in Budapest or Sydney - then I'm probably interested in them. This guy is a 99 rated 5 star on 247 and a high 4 star on Scout. I know Alabama has been struggling with their player evaluations and as a result has fielded a weak team lately, but hey ....

Fugate was a soft blocker, Bart took his spot fair and square.

I don't know about Fugate being a soft blocker, but I do think Bart won the position with his good play on the field. Disappointed as I was to never see Fugate running the ball, I hope that his athleticism will become an asset to the team this year. The LB corps is thin and we really need Fugate and a few others to take their play to a higher level.

It was a stupid move at the time. There were other solutions.
