'14 KY DT Matt Elam

Pretty sure the was an article at the time that stated Fugate went to the coaches askin to move to LB. He's a beast on special teams; I hope he sees the field a lot this year on D! I think we'll see more rotation among the D with the up tempo offense so I hope he does well!

Okay.. so there's one? So basically you support my argument that we don't recruit "talent" from the bluegrass state. Maybe a couple a year, but other than that.. ???

If someone gets an offer from Alabama and they live in Budapest or Sydney - then I'm probably interested in them. This guy is a 99 rated 5 star on 247 and a high 4 star on Scout. I know Alabama has been struggling with their player evaluations and as a result has fielded a weak team lately, but hey ....

So you're telling me that we should go after a kid because the almighty Alabama does? We're supposed to base our observations on what they do? Sure it's the Jimmies and Joes that make a difference, but there has to be x's and o's, and that's all SABAN my friend. Did I say I didn't want Elam? No. I simply stated I like the guys we are in on a little bit more.

“I talk to Notre Dame like three or four times a week,” Elam mentioned. “We stay in real good contact. I talk to Coach (Tony) Alford and Coach (Bob) Elliott the most. We’ve got a good relationship.

“I’d list them in my top six and in the top three, actually,” noted Elam. “I don’t have any leaders yet, but they are up there.”

ND is in his top 3. I'd assume the other school considered to be a lock in his top 3 will be UK, and it wouldn't surprise me if Bama rounds out his top 3 out of his top 6 schools.

How did you get that impression? I hope you're right. I do think he's not a 5* talent, but a 4* with his size would be a huge pickup.

I could be reading it wrong, but before the camp season he was really high on Kentucky and Tennessee. Bama was up there, and now they really aren’t. From what TideWarrior was saying they were looking at some other guy and Mosely for either OL/DL. And somebody posted a rumor that he was really interested in coming down to Foundation Day even without an offer.

And by going by his school interests (Matt Elam Recruit Interests) as of 7/27 he’s got five ‘Warm’ schools, and that was from before UT offered. He says he’s got a group of 6 that are his top schools, and that’s 4 local(ish) schools, UT and Bama. I know that’s not usually true, but he has talked about Notre Dame, Bama, UK, and UT from comment in this thread.

My real reason for optimism being that Bama seems to be going in another direction, Ohio State isn’t interested, Notre Dame got run over by an SEC school, and UL and UK-while local-aren’t going to be as good as Tennessee.

So, to answer your question, I guess...homerism?

Good answer

I'm slightly optimistic, but I thought he was all UK from the start.

we're #4 here. coulds been easily #1.

the infatuation with the domers kills me.

kid goes to kentucky, dome, or tn. period.

I wonder what this means for our other targets at DT. Maybe nothing but it seems odd that we randomly decide to offer now...Mosley and Elam would play the same position. Unless we view Mosley as an Oline prospect and Elam as our NT.

I’m thinking the staff thinks it’s out of the Lamin race, that’s what prompted them to move to Elam. My wild guess, of course. But it seems like they would take both Mosley AND Elam if they will both want on board.

And as far as positions go, it was the Spring when Strip was talking about how they were going to use Big Dan as the 3-technique (UT). I can see both Mosley and Elam filling that same role. And they rotate ruthlessly so it ain’t like the starters are hogging the snaps.

They seem to prefer a 6'0" to 6'3" 1-technique (NT) with a lot of pass-rush ability (Poona Ford comes to mind immediately). But there are some situations where you’d want some bigger guys on the field who don’t specialize in pass-rush and are more run-stop. Not saying Elam and Mosley can’t rush, it’s just the first thing you think of with a 320+pounder is ‘run stopper’.

"I've been waiting for that (Tennessee) offer," said Elam. "Coach Steve Stripling (Defensive Line Coach) said at first I was too big for their scheme."

"He started watching more film and studying. He said in the SEC they need great, big defensive tackles, so he wants the best and he offered," he said.

On top 6:

"Tennessee just moved into it. They didn't take anyone's spot," he said.

Tennessee joined*Alabama,*Kentucky,*Ohio State,*Louisville*and*Notre Dame according to Elam.
