'14 MD LB Jerome Dews (UT Commit 6/24)

"He tweeted out that he will spend the fall semester at the Atlanta Sports Academy, it's a prep school, in an attempt to gray-shirt.

As we'e said all along, this one never seemed to be cut and dry.

Tennessee won't sign him with an NLI."

I Just got a text from VQ saying the same thing.

Is it just me? What's up with the "glass is half empty" by Fort? "..attempt to grey shirt", "...won't sign him..."!

Kid is all Vol and UT's coaching staff appears to be all Dews.
MDO- a little disappointed he doesn't get his big day tomorrow but still looking forward to when he gets on campus. GoVols!

I don't know the whole story but if it was true that Dews first refused the grayshirt and then UT came back with a 2014 scholy offer..then I'm a little disappointed in the staff for not keeping their word

I'm not really familiar with the whole prep school thing. But will he be playing football at that school this fall? Since I assume he's already played 4 years of high school, how could he play an extra year at prep school and not lose a year of eligibility?

He said he will only he there for 5 months so I don't think he will be playing there.

I believe so....or maybe a mid-term enrollee?

I never understood the prep school rules. But it looks like to me that he goes to prep, then gets whatever grade thing he seems to have cleared up, then can early enroll in December. That’s the way I read the tea leaves, I’m just looking for clarification.

When Tino Thomas grayshirted he stayed home in Memphis and rehabbed. This is something different, it seems.

I believe this was the plan all along. This gives him a place to go where he can get some experience and a place to work on his craft. The kid will not be 18 until November. He nneds the time to mature and grow in his body. None of this is a surprise to Dews.

We dont know that to be the case.

His dad has stated here many times they are good with the greyshirt. They had two scenarios presented, a scholly if the numbers worked, a greyshirt if they didn't. He said they were fine with either. I love the kids that are willing to make a sacrifice to be a Volunteer. If a kid is willing to sacrifice for the team now, wait till he's actually on campus. These are the type of kids that are always my favorites and while I pull for all the Vols, I pull for these kids just a little more!

Didn't realize Dews was so young. Did he start school early and end up a grade ahead of most kids his age? If that's the case, that's pretty interesting, because it means he's basically been playing his entire life over competition that is a level above him in terms of development.

Supposedly, he was born mid-November 1996, which would be unusual for him to have ended up in the class he did. Normally the cut-off is around the 1st of September or October if I'm not mistaken. Most kids his age would be High School Juniors right now.

Here's a link to cut-off dates for Kindergarten in all the states:

Not at all, he can use a semester to get himself together, now he may not have to redshiet when he gets there, we knew this was a posibility all along, win win for us.

He never refused the grayshirt, the staff has been forthcoming the whole time, nothing shady was going on, great staff and honest the whole time

Every time you post, I get happy. Pumped you're family is all Vol. I'm not a highly sentimental person, but seriously, your family deserves the best.
