'14 MD LB Jerome Dews (UT Commit 6/24)

I prefer he gets a scholarship so he can workout and practice with the team, which will really help his development. With the GS he cannot do these things with the team.

With that said they may GS him and put him on Scholarship in January 2015.

If Dews is gray shirting it means he would not enroll until Jan. of 2015. A gray shirt is perfect for Dews. He is only 16. He could grayshirt and then redshirt. He would end up with 6 to play 4 basically. He's ok/good now. We won't see him for 2 years but when we do...he'll be in beast-mode.

Pretty sure Dews has not actually accepted a GS just yet. He thinks he is getting a scholarship and maybe he does. If it comes down to actually taking a GS, we'll see if he is still on board closer to NSD.

Hopefully Dews just walks on so we don't have him committed to a scholarship next year with a smaller class.

I completely understand the speculation around dews but I'm assuming our coaches know what they are doing and iirc they offered him on the spot at a camp. In my opinion we should welcome any kid who is ready to give his all for Tennessee. Same goes for mcclisse( spelling?)

If this kid sticks 'til signing day, I don't think he Greyshirts.

If he does Greyshirt or flips because he (or VQ) says we asked him to, I will sport a Tim Tebow avatar from NSD until the week before opening kickoff.

Yes sir. Dews was actually offered by the staff whereas McClisse has not been offered to this point. I dew :))) like Dews quite a bit as a prospect. He's raw and needs to bulk up but the potential is definitely there. If he impressed enough at camp, going against very good competition, enough to earn an offer from our coaches 1st hand then that tells me all I need to know.

He could still enroll as GS but would only take about 6 credit hours and would have to pay his own way and would not be allowed to workout or practice with the team. He could be put on scholarship in Jan 2015 and then work out and practice with the team and count towards the 2015 class.

I'm with you on both of these kids. I think Dews will end up being a stud player and the coaches obviously see something in him. But I haven't seen any kid show as much desire to be here knowing he is a borderline take as McClisse. Sometimes you just pull for the underdog.

Might be the dumbest comment I have read on here. If we did that we would have 85 5-10 170 pound white kids on the team.

Size-Strength-Range
Dews is an athletic prospect with the height, range and playing speed for the outside linebacker position at the BCS level of play. However there is the need to add bulk to his frame while improving playing strength. This prospect runs well demonstrating good sideline-to-sideline range.

Instincts/Take On Skills
Playing from a two- and three-point stance on the line of scrimmage we see very good initial quickness. He beats defenders across the line demonstrating the balance and agility needed to react and make plays in tight spaces. Not yet a dominant take-on player at the point of attack but he does flash the ability to play with leverage, set the edge and shed upfield to contain.

Tackling
Consistent getting ball carriers to the turf, but his balance and finish must be improved. He does drag tackle some and allows leaky yards after contact.

3rd Down Capabilities
Will need to gain experience as a coverage defender as his primary responsibility is rushing the passer. He is quick off the edge demonstrating the ability to squeeze the pocket while displaying very good foot quickness along with the ability to change direction and move through traffic. Displays quick hands but must develop a repertoire of moves.

Bottom Line
In addition to playing linebacker, Dews is productive as a possession receiver and he flashes efficient route running skills along with hands catching ability. He appears quicker than fast and lacks elite speed. However his motor and instincts are the qualities which should allow him to succeed on defensive side of the ball. Some time and a redshirt year will be needed to grow physically while improving playing strength.

Agreed x1000.

I'd give 110% for the Vols, not get in any trouble, be a great ambassador for the university...
...but I wouldn't help us win any football games. (except vandy, we'd still win that one)

Oh I'm sorry, since all of you had standing offers from UT. Im saying any kids that the coaches offer and/or have committed. I think its funny that we land a few big recruits now you feel entitled to a class of all 4 and 5 stars. To say a kid like Dews doesnt deserve a spot because we dont have room when the coaches offered him a scholarship is ridiculous. He earned an offer and committed to play for our school, Why would you not want to support the kid.

I would say clearly I'm implying a kid with an offer but then again....I would hope that was a given considering I'm making comments in the recruiting forum.

To all the haters, he has been updated to 3* on espn per twitter. I think the coaches can pick out talent better than recruiting services and better than we can. I wonder where he will end up on the other sites?

Hope that doesn't come across as being too harsh. I'm pulling for this kid because he was so excited about being a Vol and really got hammered on the day he committed.
