'15 FL DE Marques Ford (FORMER UT commit)

A long snapper is more important than an 8th string DE. Everyone wants to say this guy or that guy is a must take, but if the top 10 DE's all wanted to commit, we couldn't take them all.

If the top 10 at every position want in, you make room. Can't turn elite prospects away.

:whistling:

I hope they didn't drop Ford for ANOTHER skill position player but it looks like they did for John Kelly..................., as I would take OL / DL ALL Day in the SEC vs skill position players...........

Don't take this personal, but that's insane. We have 2RBs currently, Hurd and Kamara. Lane graduated, Young graduated, Scott transferred, Pickett's not coming back. If one of those two RBs gets injured, do you really believe one back can carry us the rest of the season? A third RB is crucial. We'll be fine on the DL this year, and we'll recruit more DEs next year. The way things went down sucks, but a third RB is absolutely more important than an fourth DE.

*Edit - I did forget about Bussey coming in, but isn't he coming off an injury or something? I still hold another RB is more important than a fourth DE. I wish we could take them all, but it is what it is.

And I still hope Butch is a bit more careful in the future. Shiz happens, but this doesn't look good on us. Whether other teams do it or not, no team looks good dropping a player like this 2 weeks before NSD.

I think the concern about the Ford situation is legit. It was a shock to all of us. And there is reason to question CBJ. However, I am very unhappy to see so many VN posters attacking Lovingood as the culprit. Outstanding ST performers are critical to a successful season. Look at how important Giampapa's consistency and contribution has been. I'm totally on board with having both Lovingood and Townsend. We need them going forward.

Let's lighten up on the Lovingood criticism.

I honestly thought 4 DE's was a must in this class after Hendrix and Henderson didn't work out in last year's class.

Under different circumstances, I would agree. The need for RB is greater.

The returning roster at DE is very weak by SEC standards, depth-wise especially.

After Barnett (and Maggitt when his hand is down), that position looks really subpar IMO. When guys like Vereen and Lewis are in your two deep and even starting in your base 4-3 that is trouble.

Disagree.

Too, there are EE Phillips and Butcher and the benefit of participating in both Spring and Summer camps.

I hate it but at the same time Jones has to do what is best for the team. The timing of it just sucks, I feel terrible for the kid. Coaches don't always get to be the good guy especially if they're successful but this and the Dews recruitment bother me. More upset with the system than our staff in particular.

Best for the team?

ummm, Ok.
I seriously doubt that the best thing for the team is to let a guy be committed to you for 6 months, bond with recruits, pay for multiple trips to Knoxville on his own dime, rep UT at all-star games, and then pull the rug out from under him with less than two weeks until national signing day. That's freakin despicable and I can't believe the way some of you sheep apologize for this.

I don't see much difference in this and when a player decomits the day before NSD. That happens all the time. Until pen hits paper, it's all just talk...

Oh okay, you're right. This is just part of Butch's plan to be an absolute bastard. That makes way more sense than the coach doing what is in the best interest of the team.

WTF do you want us to say, everyone hates it for the kid. It does piss me off at Jones some but again I do not think this was some elaborate plan to screw this kid over. Phillips came into the fold late, Taylor stuck, and Hendrix maybe returning. I hate it but we need depth at other positions. I despise this and the way the Dews recruitment went down but again what are we going to do count the ways that Jones is a terrible person or assume he is trying to do what is best for the program.

Not pissed at you, just upset at the situation.

So you think its a better idea to tell a kid who enrolled early and is already on the team, that he needs to leave? (Kyle Phillips or Andrew Butcher). Phillips is the reason Ford isnt a Vol. We already have 11 DEs and only 85 roster spots. We have to take other positions as well.

This one hurt. I really like the kid. This is the ugly side of recruiting that goes both ways.

No ones fault here. The bad part though, is that his world has been turned upside down overnight.

Looks like CBJ was honest with the kid and that is all you can ask.

I wish the best of luck to him.

I don't think logic is on the menu for guys bashing Butch right now. I think Ford is going to be a player and I hate losing him, but this is the ugly nature of recruiting. You have kids leaving last second and you have coaches that cut loose commits late in the game as well. The verbal commitment stuff really doesn't mean anything on either side. It's all about the LOI after NSD.

I'm around the FB complex at MTSU for class and the DFO brought up the subject of Marques no more than 5 minutes into the start of class as an example of how wild the recruiting silly season can be. Trust me, other schools are fully aware and will be all over this guy. What happened with him and UT really sucks but he's still gonna get his school paid for somewhere and I hope he balls out.

Some of you need to stay away from recruiting. Too easily butthurt over the coaches decisions. The coaches probably weren't real happy with having to tell the young man they needed his scholarship somewhere else, but that is all part of putting a winning program together. Let it all play out.....let's see who we get over the next two weeks to use that scholarship.

I was looking forward to seeing Ford in Orange too, but the coaches had a reason for pulling his offer.

Butch has done nothing to date in recruiting to make me question his calls.......this included. He knows the pieces we need and he's filling those spots.

Remember, he's shooting for a top 3 class.

There is a huge difference and the I'd say the thing preventing you from seeing it is orange colored or Butch colored glasses. I swear this guy could piss on y'alls head, tell you it's raining, and you'd believe it.

A 17 or 18 year old making one of the biggest decisions in their lives, having a change of heart is one thing. An institution and/or professionally paid coach playing roulette with the life of a student athlete is another.

You can't tell me that this was a spur of the moment decision. This has been in the works for a while. They played this kid. I don't want to here, 'everyone does it.' That is moral relativism. Everyone doing something doesn't make it right. I hope it bites them in the ass.

Your spite is showing. Now that you've made it clear that you aren't a Vol fan, why should anyone care what you think or hope?

My favorite thing in all of this is how Vandy slaughters us for getting rid of him and then sends tweets to try and get him to play for them.

@EspanaDore: @Marques_Ford Come to Vandy! You can get revenge every year. We need you #AnchorDown

@VUCommodore: @Marques_Ford and you'd be able to get some sweet sweet revenge from that "team out east" #AnchorDown

@VUCommodore: Not sure if @Marques_Ford is looking at VU, but if he is, talk about a living legend in the making. He take over the SEC as a freshman! ⚓️⬇️

Also I want to add that Marques was a favorite player of mine in this class and wish him the best of luck but if goes to Vandy he should be warned of no bowl games for the foreseeable future.

Playing roulette with the life of a student athlete?!?! Please tell me that is not serious. In any way relating what Ford is going to with his life ending, even figuratively, is more sensational than even the biggest shock jock. Even Clay Travis would say that is ridiculous. He will still get a full scholarship to play D1 football at the highest level.

Anyone claiming it's no big deal to drop a kid 2 weeks before NSD would dang sure not feel that way if it was their kid being dropped. Kid has a matter of days now to restart his whole recruitment as he had shut it down long ago. If them taking Kelly causes them to lose Ford and Bussey, it's on them.
