'15 FL OL Tyree St. Louis

Schottenheimer is a damn good coach. Great hire by Georgia, but he is bolting for the NFL at the first opportunity.

Seems legit since he bolted from the NFL for the same position.

You want to name a time when Schottenheimer has demonstrated that he is a damn, good coach?

Hiring Schott is like hiring Dooley. The last name is impressive, but what has he actually done? He's been an NFL OC, but he wasn't a highly successful OC. Those saying "look at who he had to work with", need to remember an NFL offense is made up of better players than a college offense. How many teams in FBS football? Compare that to 32 NFL teams. The talent on a college offense is much more watered down. His body of work does not support that he will be successful. He might be, but it's not guaranteed. However you look at it, he'll be working with inferior talent than he's used to on the college level. He'll have some very talented players that will go on to the league. He'll also have less talented players who have reached their pinnacle at the college level. Not every player goes on to a pro career.

Besides being really long, is the name even that impressive?

Can you name one thing he has ever done well?

Also, does he have any experience in the college game? If not he will be a weak recruiter and be bad at interacting with these teenagers and young men, but then again he wasn't even good at interacting with grown men so this will probably be a complete farce.

But whatever, the dinner table has spoken and it says it's a good hire...

I thought Cam Cameron was going to do big things at lsu. That hasn't worked out well so far and I'd say Cameron > Schotty

EDIT: To be fair, it is a little early but this year, woof.

Vintage Spurrier on Brian Schotgoijdueurieier...

"He’s been an NFL coach. I don’t know why he went to college,” Spurrier said. “Maybe he wanted to go back to college, or maybe it was just a good opportunity for him. That’s an excellent opportunity for any coach. Georgia always has a whole bunch of good players. They probably have been the most consistent team in the East. Well, maybe they haven’t, heck we’ve beat them four out of five years, but overall they have probably been one of the best teams on the Eastern side.”

No question. The problem with NFL coaches is that very few of them have the imagination it takes to win in college. In the NFL, the game is so fast that it limits trick plays, true option plays, etc. This is why I believe it's easier for an elite, very creative college coach to go from college to pro than it is for a pro coach to go to college. See Chip Kelly, etc.

P.S. I'm well aware this standard doesn't always hold true aka Saban, etc.

IMO, there's a lot of variables that come into play in college that are eliminated in pro aka recruiting, grades, etc. College also takes a lot more developing, where the NFL takes more refining. Players in the NFL have to want to be great to be great because everyone is a great football player in the NFL.

If he isn't a good OC, explain how has he been an NFL OC since 2006?

Numbers don't lie. If he was a "good OC", wouldn't his offense be productive?

How does anyone who isn't right for a job keep it longer than they should? Politics, connections, etc. I'm assuming.

Rob Ryan approves this message.

Marty Schottenheimer is a pretty big NFL name. I don't consider myself much of an NFL fan, but I recognize the last name instantly.

Mostly it was a joke - long, impressive. Teeing up a that's what she said.

But, IMO, Marty isn't that great of a coach. Postseason disaster. Plus, the game passed him by a couple decades ago. There's a good reason he hasn't gotten a sniff of the NFL since the Chargers fired him nearly a decade ago.

I think Schottenheimer has seen the writing on the wall. He's been passed over for NFL head coaching jobs and is coming back to audition for a college job. Jmo

Did he really say that.. I love Spurrier, good ol Tennessee boy

Rumor was he would have been fired by the Rams anyway. He took the Georgia as a way out before the hammer fell.

It is beyond explanation that someone who has consistently been one of the worst OC's in the NFL since 2006 hasnt been demoted to a position coach or been completely removed from the league.

Well Butch Jones has beaten Spurrier ever since he has became head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers!!!

Same. No clue how good he is, but most high school kids don't either.

Do you think most HS kids even know who Marty is though? The last time he coached a team (not including the Virginia Destroyers) they were probably in the 3rd grade.

OK, Mr. St Louis. It's clear that UT is the place to be. Great things are happening at Rocky Top and you need to be an important part of that. And we need you. Let's do this!!!

When I hear the name Marty I think McFly
