'15 JUCO CB Justin Martin (UT Signee 2/4/15)

Don't doubt BB. He knows his stuff.

He may think I'm doubting the dude which is not the case. I hope he adds the size over the Summer personally. He's a freak athlete at CB. Just needs to be sting in this league. Corners have to tackle RBs in SEC. Just look at this coming from us. We've got a 6'6 250lb Senior WR Croom(4 year player) blocking you and a 240lb hard running fast RB in Hurd coming to edge. Now tell a 165lb CB to make the play. Doesn't look good at all. A guy that's a veteran in the SEC doesn't want that problem at CB. Lol

No CB makes that play. Croom and Hurd is just not fair LoL.

Oooooh, That's cole, man

Nah at 165lbs he's got to handle the physicality of the league. I watched Sutton first year have trouble getting off stalk blocks at times from just a strength standpoint. We've got second and third year guys that'll be able to cover well enough plus play in the run game.

I agree and glad we're recruiting bigger DBs now.

I have to admit, I'm a little disappointed to hear about his lack of physical development. He's 6'2"... how in the world is he reporting around 165 ?? That kid has the frame to carry 210 without losing any speed.

There are weight rooms in JUCO. What the hell has he been doing?? We needed him to be at least close to being able to compete from a strength standpoint.
With his natural talent , it would have just been reps and mental adjustment. He's not going to put on enough weight and be use to it, by the beginning of the season.

Well, all he can do is try and catch up. But after hearing this my previous assumptions about Moseley owning that opposite CB spot is becoming more real.

Maybe you have a different definition of manhandled, but In my observation Justin Coleman was the most physical CB we had. A great tackler as well. He just COULD NOT cover anyone. Which is horrible if you're playing CB.

He was a safety, a smaller athletic safety. He was playing out of position.

But I never saw WR's block him into oblivion or seen him get trucked by rb's and any other ball carrier.

He is listed at 173 lbs so making progress.

I don't mean to come off as bashing the kid. I know his mother is on this forum and I don't want to offend. But he has a prime opportunity in front of him.

It just seems like he hasn't be utilizing his time wisely. I don't know, I could be very wrong. But 165?? He's not a true freshman.

You can put on good weight in a short amount of time, but here is the thing anybody who has played football knows. YOU LOSE some of that weight during the season. You lose muscle... So maybe he does get to 185 if he's lucky. He might very well end up back in the 170's by season's end.

All you can really do is fight to stay at that weight through out that season. Maintain...

But you don't usually gain during the season. That's what the off-season is for. I just have to wonder... what has he been doing the past 6 months to prepare his body for SEC football?

A athlete of his rare ability... should train harder than most. Because he has the gifts! He should have at least reported around 190 solid muscle.

What were you looking at? He could tackle even if he didn't cover the deep ball well. That was one of his strengths.

I was looking at running plays to his side, and also WR screens to his side, when he was stuck on blocks. That's what I was referring to more than his tackling.

Unless I am grossly mistaken I remember him getting manhandled on blocks on running plays around the corner and also on WR screens, especially his junior year and before.

And I would also call sutton much more physical. That's my opinion anyways. Sutton has blown up many WR screens. Notice what side most teams went after on WR screens...Coleman's.

He would hold the edge and not look to make the play. Most CBs know it's the LBs job to clean up the play if they contain. He did better last year of looking to be a factor in the running game.

They stopped throwing screens against us period last year. Our CBs were all attacking them with vengeance. You're talking about 2013. I remember the other DBs letting screens kill us.

I don't think you can ask a CB to fight off a block. He can either anticipate the block is coming and knife past the WR before he engages ala Sutton or all he can do is contain. Can't think of many outside a Richard Sherman who could stand up a WR and move him out of the way.

As I said, I was especially referring to Jr year and before. I remember being very frustrated many times on plays going for big chunks to his side. Now I will not claim to have expertise on defensive strategies and assignments and all that. But I seem to remember him being stuck on blocks....a lot.

Maybe I have been spoiled watching Sutton. Haha

A CB must defeat blocks. That's part of the job. Watch Alabama and LSU their CBs routinely beat WRs up for trying to block them. That's because they don't run a lot of 165-170lb CBs out there. Sutton this year will manhandle WRs with his strength as a junior. A lot of CBs welcome these engagements. You get to bust WRs up for trying to engage with you. I for one personally liked to throw them down then after the play say "get in the weight room". Lol I teach every young CB I deal with to throw WRs to the ground early in the game. They'll learn to not touch you after a while.

I'm being critical for sure.

When I hear about Austin Smith and Khalil MacKeinze coming into summer session physically ready to go, high school guys, it makes you wonder about a guy who has already had a year of college.

I know Martin had some academic work to take care of before he got here. Maybe he was stressed about that and just couldn't focus on anything but that.

But as one of our supposed immediate impact players, you would like to hear about how he looks ready to go.
Go Fight Win was very clear about Martin's dire need to put on a lot of weight... site reporters as well said the same thing.

I doubt he would lose that weight. Bet 165lbs shouldn't be his natural weight. It's stick to him. He's bigger than that in his highlight videos.

KMac has a ridiculous amount of resources available. He can get a pro level S&C with ease due to his dad. I would bet he's been in that style of conditioning system for a while now.
