'15 JUCO CB Justin Martin (UT Signee 2/4/15)

He will announce towards the end of Jan. The thing about Martin is that LSU is the most competition for him and he said that he is going where he thinks he can get the most immediate playing time. It seems that would be Tennessee.

Assuming TN staff really wants him, since he likes UT and we have huge need there I'm suprised he hasn't publicly committed yet. Unless Butch spreading it out with the commitment times

They have like 2 highly rated cbs committed and lead for another don't they? Hopefully that helps us, he and Sutton with Gaulden at nickel would be sick.

McNeil is slow. I mean really slow. I'm a Jancek fan, but lining McNeil up on a WR is a mistake. Same goes for Coleman. If it were me, I'd start TKJR. I'd play Evan some too, especially on passing downs. In terms of Coleman, one more game. Guys a Vol, but his football IQ is terrible.

In terms of landing Martin, it's going to be a battle to the end for him. We need him badly. If he comes, I wouldn't be surprised to see E. Mos step into Coleman's role as the 3rd CB/starting NB. Gaulden and Foreman would be the backups to those three.

Yea I could see Mcneil as a LB of some sort. Dude will lay somebody out if he can keep the guy in front of him.

For some reason I thought I read he hasn't been able to visit UT yet for his official. I can't remember why but think I remember seeing he had to wait till Jan. Maybe someone who knows more can comment on why that was.

Gaulden was one of my favorite recruits last year. Looking forward to seeing more of him next year.

Ryan Callahan on who could make early commitment to Tennessee...

Quote:
Martin, a former standout at Overton High School in Nashville, Tenn., who enrolled at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in January, was forced to cancel his scheduled visit to Tennessee on Tuesday because junior-college prospects aren’t allowed to take unofficial visits before completing their second semester at junior college. But the Vols remain the early favorite to land Martin after helping him get to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M and putting together a plan that could allow him to transfer to a four-year school by next summer. Martin is hoping to make his decision sometime during the upcoming season, and seven of the eight early predictions on 247Sports’ Crystal Ball point to Tennessee as the team to beat.

Thanks man. I knew there was some reason why he hasn't visited yet just didn't know exactly why.

This is the most important commitment that we need for next year on defense. He makes an immediate impact.

Agreed, we need a lockdown corner on the opposite side of Cam. Think Mosely is gonna be a great corner for us too but Martin and Cam opposite each other next yr will improve the secondary immensely. How many times this yr did teams go away from Cam and were running wide open downfield with Coleman ten yards behind. Especially both Coopers, Mizzou picked on him for several big plays that killed us in that game. Seemed about 95% of the times when we were getting hit with big plays it was Coleman losing his man and letting him get wide open or McNeil taking horrible angles and blowing past him. Martin could start day one here, doubt he would at LSU. Definitely one of the most important players we need in this class.

What makes great defenses unique is the ability to make opponents one dimensional. Having all three of Sutton, Moseley and Martin in rotation at CB; Gaulden (Payne?) potentially at nickel; and TKjr and Evan Berry at safety relatively soon is how that gets done when you have a great pass rush from the front four. Need Martin.

Absolutely. You can have the best secondary in football but if you can't get to the QB and he has time guys are gonna get open. The best CB can't keep a WR covered forever. A great pass rushing DLine can make an average secondary look good. But if we have like you brought up and have a great DLine and a great pass rushing DLine to go along with a a great secondary then that wins you championships. I hate Ala but that was their biggest prob on Defense this yr. They have good run stoppers but couldn't get to the QB and their secondary struggled with teams who could pass the ball. Not sure if Ohio St can take advantage of that without Barrett or Miller but Oregon or Florida St could. Especially Oregon because of Mariota's ability to run and Saban has struggled with those type QB's .

I still think we get Martin even though LSU is putting up a real fight. Tiny was going to Auburn until he changed his mind on signing day. There is still a loonngg way to go

From Woody @ Rivals
Got a flood of Justin Martin information today so I will pass along what I know based on talking to Justin and his family today.

1. Justin Martin was silently committed to Tennessee for the past couple of months. Tennessee has been aware of Martin from his high school days and monitored his move to junior college very closely. While the Vols might have been his first official offer as a JUCO, he has essentially always had a standing offer assuming he completed his academic requirements. Martin is still on schedule to graduate in the spring and enroll at the summer at whichever school he selects.

2. Martin and his family reached out to Tennessee today to let them know that he was going to open up his recruitment and that Tennessee should no longer consider him a commit. With Martin set to take four more official visits (Georgia, Auburn, Tennessee and LSU) next month, he and his family wanted to make sure Tennessee had a back up plan in place in case he elects to go to one of those programs. Originally it looked like Ugo Amadi was a backup plan, but with him also sort of in limbo right now the move to inform Tennessee was a courtesy, according to those I've spoken with.

3. Martin is very high on LSU and they are the team to beat right now. Martin's direct quote is "LSU is my front runner, LSU is my leader" Last week Martin's was visited by Corey Raymond and John Chavis (Martin wasn't at the meeting because he was on an official visit to Oklahoma) and I'm told that the coaches helped smooth over any concerns his mother may have about him going that far from home. According to Martin, his main focus is going to the school that can best prepare him for the NFL so that will be his No. 1 factor in making a final decision.

4. Despite the visits to Georgia and Auburn, I would still consider this a two-school race between Tennessee and LSU. The Tigers will get the final visit, with Tennessee set to get the visit the weekend before.

5. Martin is still a very important target for Tennessee and is very much a take in this class.

Not looking good. His family confirmed he was indeed a silent commit to UT, but LSU firm leader now.

Unbelievable.

I wish Chavis would've given this type of effort in recruiting when he was here.

Um, wait what? Chavis is responsible for some of the best players that ever put on that orange and white jersey. His defense was always one of the best in the country.. So are you talkin about his later years? Because those late 90s and early 00 defenses were nothing to shake a stick at.

Ugo or bust, unless we can get back in on Fields. I think he's Clemson bound.

Hopefully we secure Ugo and Phillips.
