'15 JUCO RB Alvin Kamara (UT commit 6/21/14)

A combination of our thin defensive depth, the proverbial "freshman wall", and just plain ole good offenses we've faced lately have all played apart in carving up this defense. But somehow D Barnett saw that proverbial wall taking a toss sweep, and then tackled it for loss. And, strangely, I don't see AJ flying to the ball like he did in the early part of the season.

I think AJ has been banged up, too...maybe an ankle or something which would affect his speed.

And with the returning starters and additions for next year, we could also have a top 4 defense. Only concern I have is replacing the instinctiveness of AJ at MLB.

I'm praying for Curt to take over MLB. His potential there is through the roof and Barnett and Vereen showing out this year hopefully makes that call easier for the coaches. He's the only player I can think of on the roster that is an instant plug and play replacement for AJ.

Would love for this to happen. Doubt they do it because of how they have developed him at Leo.

Kamara and Hurd are going to destroy a lot of D's next season now that we have the right QB and a developing O-line. I knew we would not get Kamara with Dools. But now that he has adapted well to his personal changes and is committed, I am feeling really good about him in this system.

I think Maggitt is much better suited to play on the outside like he has been, where he can use his speed and pass rushing ability to get after the QB and chase down outside running plays. Mainly because he's so good in that role when healthy but I also don't think he's suited to play on the inside and take on FBs and pulling guards.

I'm hoping Jakob Johnson continues to progress and can take over for AJ next year. One thing that will help is that the talent around him is going to be so much better than when AJ was young. I'm also excited to see how Bryant progresses after a much needed red shirt year to get stronger and learn the system. I think the future is bright for us at LB; Bates, McDowell, Bryant, Johnson, and Elliot Berry are all freshman with a lot of potential.

I don't necessarily disagree with your basic point, but I do wonder why you would question Maggitt's ability to "play on the inside and take on FBs and pulling guards"?

He's actually bigger than AJ:

AJ - 6'2" 245
Curt - 6'3" 250

Also we know he has the sideline to sideline speed.

I don't know that they'll move him, but I think he could pull it off.

I think Curt is better as a situational rusher. He's not been nearly as durable as AJ, and I wouldn't want to put the defensive calls in the hands of a guy who I doubt could stay in the field taking that many snaps.

I'm betting JRM makes the calls and Bates plays along side him in most sets. If we need to go bigger with a 3rd LB, JJ or Bryant get in the game. And I'd bet on Bryant.

How has Gavin Bryant progressed, I haven't heard a lot about him?

Also will Weatherd have two more years after this year, or just one?

Really hope Bryant redshirted and has been working his tail off in the weight room to cut bad weight and get stronger and faster.

I have a feeling he might have the most potential of any ILB last cycle. His film was sick.

I can kinda see Weatherd stepping into a very similar role to what Curt has this year. I wouldn't mind seeing Curt move to MLB after AJ's departure with JRM assuming his usual position.

I don't see Curt as much of a coverage guy. He's a straight up pass rusher. I think he needs to stay right where he is

Will Bates possess the size needed to man the MLB spot next year though?

He was playing at around 6'3" 220 this year, correct?

I guess the idea of him playing at 6'3" 235 next year isn't beyond the realm of possibility. But, is that big enough?
