Just talked to Sterling Johnson a little bit ago and he just wrapped up his full day in Knoxville. He was even hanging with several players until about 9:30 and will head home tomorrow.
He liked Tennessee and the atmosphere and liked getting to know the coaches. He said if he had a top five right now Tennessee would be in it. We'll have that story tomorrow afternoon with Johnson talking about his visit.
Johnson, whos being recruited by Tennessee as a possible three-technique defensive tackle, said he also was excited to find out about the Vols recently announced apparel deal with Nike, which begins in July
".....it did kind of excite me when I talked to coach Butch Jones and he was telling me about how theyre signing with Nike, Johnson said. He said Nikes trying to turn them into the Oregon of the South, and I really like that title, because thats a lot of uniform combinations.
"I liked it here a lot," Johnson said. "I really didn't know what to expect but it's definitely a a place I'll be coming back to and I'm definitely considering them. I liked it." "They told me they really like me as a player and they think I can help them get thinks back to the way they should be at Tennessee," Johnson said.
"It was really nice. I'm usually able to tell if people are legitimately about what they say, even if it's not in recruiting, just life in general, and I really, truly feel like he is," Johnson said of the head coach. "The people are here are amazing," Johnson explained. "I'm not really sure on a top five, but I know if I had a top five today Tennessee would be in it."
"It's been really busy, but at the same time it's a blessing to have all of these opportunities to do something you love and get a free education while you're at it," Johnson said. "I look for the atmosphere, the people that are in it, the overall feel of the college town and the academics and the football aspect of things," Johnson said.
I honestly see that Tennessee is going to be on top soon. Like real soon. Theres no doubt in my mind, Johnson told IT. Coach Jones was just saying six win seasons arent acceptable. Just his personality and, you know, hes a proven winner everywhere hes been. Hell get it done. Theyre going to make some noise.
Johnsons second favorite part of the visit was learning that the Vols will be switching to Nike after the season.
For real, that as a big deal to me, he said. Nike is that stuff.
That place was just awesome, Johnson said. It doesnt get much better. It was impressive.
