15' NC OT Emanuel McGirt

I would not have, but I think the UT staff has. We'll see if it works out. I would have turned my focus to Sweet as IMO flipping him from UNC was the smarter play.

JMO

Do you think we are pursuing either/ both McGirt and Sweet? They are both 4*. Seems to me, they are the best true OTs available other than Richmond. Good size although I don't know about their length.

UT's coaches may be talking to both, but I doubt either will be listening much. Only way they were going to get another OT to consider flipping was if they had cut ties with Richmond. No recruit is going to consider flipping if he knows at any point Richmond flips to UT his chance of also having a spot is in question.

Yes, I know fans will claim "we will take them all". It's just not reality.

You can only sell the idea that "you're the man we want" so many times before recruits realize it's just coach speak.

You don't think that CBJ would take the first to commit? At this point, why would he hold out hope for Richmond? Time to move on and get the best 4* available.

I can't see us not taking two or three more ots. That's the most beleaguered spot on our team. We would probably drop any spot we could to gain there.imo, but I'm not a big insider on recruiting practices.

Yes they did. That was still year 1 and the improvement people/recruits are looking for would be more toward year 2. Still a while to go till NSD after year 2. We'll see. Hopefully the staff can hold the class together, especially on offense.

Recruits buy the whole rebuilding message in year 1. Coaches don't get as much slack in year 2. If we don't make a bowl, I'm guessing a few recruits will decommit. Not many, but I'll bet a few.

This is what I'm worried about as well. The big question is can recruits for this class look past our record (if we don't make a bowl), and see that we have made great strides in improvement in every phase of the game, except the OL (which was extremely young and inexperienced). If they can, then we will be fine this class. I think we can keep our defensive class together due to the vast improvement on that side of the ball. It's the other side of the ball that worries me. I hope these guys can pick themselves up for the last 4 games after today, and get it done. They really need the bye week in 2 weeks to get healthy.

I take the first offensive tackle that commits from this group and shower him with whatever attention that is needed to keep him through NSD. Butch can not afford to not land a left tackle in this group. Take what you get and call it a day.

That could possibly happen. I'm more inclined to think that recruits are seeing progress, especially on the defensive side, and recognize that the program is a year away. The ones who leave may say they want a "winning" program, but they most likely have been recruited over. Despite our record, Tennessee is still a top school for these kids.

PV, just wondering if you know whether he is interested in us at all, or if we are way too late to the party on this recruit?

I can only guess if we are on him this hard there is mutual interest. I doubt CBJ would be wasting his time on a solid no. Also immediate PT at UT in the SEC trumps NC ST all day long.

I would certainly agree with your assessment. However,, we all have to understand that high school kids making a decision on where they are going to spend their next 4 years do not think about it the way a fan does. The fact that we see immediate playing time at an SEC school as a much greater opportunity, does not in any way mean that the player sees the same thing.

These decisions are most times not a well thought out and logically generated decision. They are decisions of the heart, based on relationships developed. Hopefully we can develop that kind of relationship with McGirt, if we can get him on campus.

I agree. People also have to realize that while our OL has struggled this year, sure playing time for a TFR is still very much in doubt going into next year. With almost all the OL guys returning, they will be way ahead of any new comers coming in the door.

We will also only have two true tackle prospects on the roster next year, and we still do not know how one of them is going to pan out. There are a lot of positives to look at if you are an OT prospect in this class.

Richmond is the answer he may actually have a chance to come in and start. McGirt and Sweet would need a year or two to develop though they may be thrust into the fire due to dooleys recruiting.

Or lack thereof.

But you're right the two guys we are in on that have the best chance at helping right away are Pat Allen and Drew Richmond.
