He's a soft commit. Main reason he did it, other than the fact he is leaning strongly to FSU, is because it was becoming a massive distraction and he was hoping that making the verbal would get some people off his back at home. Johnny's been being asked "Where are you going?" by people who don't even know him for a year now. He's trying to enjoy his senior year, and hopefully lead Princeton to a state championship--the school has never won one in football, and hasn't even been to the championship game since 1979. Last year might have been the year, if that last touchdown Johnny scored against James Kenan hadn't been called back.
Anyway, Princeton is 4-0 so far and he's been over 100 yards in every game; 54 rushes for 496 yards so far this season. He's only played beyond halftime in two of the games, and on Thursday night, he only got 11 carries (four of them were TD runs) against an awful team that Princeton beat 54-0. On one play, they had the ball at the 6, and a bad shotgun snap went into the backfield. Johnny retrieved it at the 27, avoided about seven defenders, and turned it into a TD.
He's still being recruited, very heavily, by a number of schools including UT. But the scuttlebutt around here has died down since his announcement, which is what Johnny wanted. He's not 100 percent comfortable with people making a fuss over him. It wasn't three years ago that he was a track runner who didn't play football. Doesn't have the prima donna "star" attitude at all; his teammates love him. I'll miss covering him when he's done, hopefully after leading Princeton to the 1-AA title this December, but not half as much as the Princeton community will.
And yes, I hope Butch changes his mind and convinces him he'd look good in orange.
