'15 OH LB Jerome Baker

Baker would be HUGE for our LB corp. And honestly, Bates getting a redshirt is a good thing for us. Of course I hate it for the kid this year, but if it keeps Bates on campus for 5 years, then it dramatically helps us for when A.J. is not here.

Bates and Gavin Bryant redshirting this year really helps them from a developmental standpoint. Bringing in Cherry, Smith, Baker, and even a guy like Darrell Taylor could possibly end up at LB. This goes a long way. And oh man if we could get DeBerry. Whoa. You really can't have enough quality LB.

...Scout...
Benedictine (Ohio) junior Jerome Baker continues to add offers to his list. The junior has well over one dozen offers.

Baker’s offers range from eight in the Big Ten (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State), three in the SEC (Arkansas, Florida, Tennessee), and Georgia Tech out of the ACC. Recently, Baker has been hearing more and more from another school down south.

“Most schools are saying that I can play either. Some, like Ohio State, want me at both positions,” said Baker.

he doesn't know how well Myers will lie to your face, does he ?

How can Bates redshirt this year?

He has to miss 80 percent of the games to qualify for medical redshirt which i think he will. The same would qualift for Jacob Gilliam. If Pearson for some reason doesnt get back this year he could as well

Butch said they didn't think Gilliam could get one, I think.

I have no idea. I've just seen reference to the fact that they feel Bates can get a Medical RS for this year.

I think it is because Gilliam has already had a regular redshirt year, whereas Dillon has not. I think it is very hard to get a sixth year of eligibility, especially when that player is from Tennessee...NCAA hates us.

Fr vs 5th yr Sr

Technically Gilliam has already used his RS.

Bates injury happened during first 4 games so he's eligible for a medical RS. Pretty simple process.

Gilliam has to apply for 6th yr thru NCAA ie Andre Debose.

What are the qualifications for whether they grant a 6th year or not? Or is it just the typical NCAA BS where they throw a dart at the wall and go with whatever?

Not really sure. Debose got a 6th yr. Matt Patchen got 6th at BC. Maybe the player has to be a former 5* who sucked so the 'AA giving them one last chance at redemption.

Typically the player in question has to have had two years of eligibility wiped out by injury, and not have used a RS year as a sort of "developmental" year unrelated to injury.

Makes sense. Maybe the NCAA does have a grain of rational thought.

Yeah if Gilliam redshirted already (which I had no idea whether he did or not), then it makes sense he wouldn't get a medical redshirt year. Very difficult to get that "6th year".

We had this discussion in the Paulk thread months ago. I see they are reporting that Bates will apply for a medical redshirt. That term is only used because of his injury. In the Paulk thread, some thought you could get a medical redshirt and regular redshirt. As Chris said, you usually only can when you are out two years with injuries. Bates will use up his redshirt this year (for medical reasons), and then he will have 4 years to play. That is my understanding.

That is correct. Gilliam could apply for 1 but it would be very hard for him to get it but Bates will get a Medical Redshirt without a problem.

I've never looked at the bylaws, but my understanding is that Bates will use his redshirt. Only if he misses another year can he apply for a medical redshirt. Gilliam could apply, but I doubt he will, much like Austin Rogers a few years ago.
