'15 TN ATH Nathan Cottrell

Anyone know if he will be at The Opening? I was under the impression he was invited?

No, I had mentioned it a few times on here he would be after someone had posted earlier he would.

It does seem odd they are holding the "Sparq National Championships" this weekend at the Opening, yet a top 5guy on the board was not an invite. I mean he actually competed and earned his spot in the top group. It's not like he was just put in there because he showed up. :birgits_giggle:

Kind of funny he had a higher sparq score then some of these elite athletes at the opening in the final 10.

I do like this kid. I'd love to see us offer, even if it's only a gray shirt opportunity

Action starts around the 40 second mark.

If by action, you meant the end of spoken awkwardness and the beginning of an awkward workout session.... Then yes, the action started around the 40 second mark.

I laughed

The funny thing is... This kid would have been a prized Derek Dooley recruit had he still been coach here. I look back at ALOT of posters that took up for DD and his bag of "Diamond in the Rough" type signees. The truth is... The majority of them had no business wearing a UT uniform. Butch Jones is signing only the best, and the best are flooding in. Thank goodness for that.

Dooley did find some diamonds like Randolph, Vereen, and Sutton but his problem was he tried to do an entire class of diamonds in the rough in an I'm a better evaluator than you arrogance or just scared to battle bama for a kid mindset.

Butch is recruiting ballers and mixing a minority of diamond in rough prospects. That 2014 class was incredible how almost all were a 4 star on at least one of the recruiting
Sites. The ones that weren't are currently our starting kicker, corner and right tackle. Not sure what come of neiko.

Brian Randolph and Sutton weren't diamond in the roughs.

Wasn't Randolph the AJC GA player of the year?

Yeah he was a 3 star though so I mentioned him as diamond because everyone on here complains when we get a 3 star but then now apparently also argues that a 3 star is not a diamond in the rough player. I will never understand this place.

I find it interesting that some want to somehow belittle Cottrell and Mitchell for opting for GaTech. I'm as Tennessee fan as they come, but the fact is that GaTech has a better record over the past few years than we do. It's not like Cottrell and Mitchell are going to a bad program or a second tier league. And they will get degrees from a great academic school, and spend their college careers in a terrific city.

It's a definite win for Nathan and Brant, as far as I am concerned. As much as we all love UT, it isn't for everybody and it doesn't make one less of a football player if they opt to go elsewhere.

While I never had many posts ever supporting the Dools, no matter how many *'s any of his recruits had, I was going to support them as Vols. It's not their fault they were signed by a man who had no business leading a football program. A lot of those "diamonds in the rough" could have very well turned out to be good football players given a quality coaching staff.

And you seriously think they "chose" GT over us? Cottrell didn't have an offer, and I'm guessing Mitchell's wasn't commitable, but maybe I'm wrong.

I hope both kids have wonderful careers at GT. Would not have bothered me a bit to see either one or both end up Vols. Just was not meant to be.

Fact is that Mitchell did choose GaTech over UT. Your guess is flat out wrong. His offer from UT was solid.

Nathan was scheduled to participate in UT's camp (the same one that Joc Bruce was offered at) the weekend after he verballed to GaTech. He may or may not have been offered by UT at that camp - we'll never know - but he did decline the invitation extended by UT when he made his commitment firm to UT. Obviously UT was still interested if he was extended the opportunity to attend that camp.

Thanks for proving my point, by the way.
