It appears Josh Smith just hasn't progressed or developed enough in the eyes of college football coaches & evaluators. He is Petera Wilson 2.0.
He will announce his college football decision on July 8th or July 9th at The Opening in Oregon. His three finalists are Kentucky, Vanderbilt, & Purdue. Tennessee never really pushed or heavily pursued Smith & hasn't been in contact with him for a good while.
Smith is still obviously a Vanderbilt lean ATP. And good for him. I am fairly close with one of the coaches at Oakland and he tells me Smith is a very good kid. And I will never talk negatively about a recruit or prospect who chooses to play with his brother and/or relative. Can't blame him there, I would do the same thing.
I just thought it was interesting to look at how some prospects' recruiting stock can fall so far so fast & how recruiting websites' offer lists on recruits are not always very accurate.
Also, the fact that UT never really pushed much with Smith would indicate to me that UT's coaching staff is feeling generally optimistic with their chances with remaining prep LB prospects. The feeling I've gathered is that Sapp is all but a done deal to UT. Cherry & Smith are both solid. I don't know much else about LB recruiting. I think all UT fans would very much want Ricky DeBerry. He is a talented player. The feeling now is UT will be in the thick of it with DeBerry throughout the recruitment, but like it has already been mentioned on this VN board, it seems DeBerry's father might like the idea of Ricky playing college football at UT more so than Ricky does. We will all see.
Go Vols.
Later Rednecks.
Congrats on the McKenzie pick up he will be a handful to reckon with for years to come.
It is funny how players get bashed when they commit to other schools and the comments that Josh Smith has not progressed, but somehow he makes the all tournament team at the Opening. Butch Jones saw that he was a Vanderbilt commit and didn't want to spend anymore time or resources on him thus he quit pursuing him, but to talk bad about a kid that you have no idea about during the recruiting process is entertaining and ranks right up there with "we didn't want him anyway". He apparently is a good kid and a good athlete and should be supported as a local kid that made it to the SEC.
Before anyway asks "why are you here", I live in Knoxville and follow the Vols as well as Vanderbilt. Looking forward to the season.
Tennessee stopped recruiting him awhile ago. Has nothing to do with Vaginabilt.Congrats on the McKenzie pick up he will be a handful to reckon with for years to come.
