Austin couldn't even get himself booed when he put the stunner on Santa Claus.
I know.
When he first fired off "Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass" to Jake "the Snake", the fans just sat in shock. Then they all started cheering him.
Then, I remember this, when Austin came out to pump a match against Owen Hart on a Monday night in 1997, he cussed the fans and they just kept cheering him on. He really could not be booed.
Wrestlemania 13 just cemented his status as a fan favorite.
Austin came along at the perfect time and was put at the forefront of WWF's "Attitude" era in response to the rise of WCW that the fans couldn't help but love him. He was completely unlike anything else they had ever seen and his greatest appeal was that he came off as completely believable. It felt like every cuss word and hand gesture was sincere.

Without him to move the matches along, the wrestling of eight years ago would be as bad as it is today.
No doubt about that. Stone Cold and the Rock were entertaining, but guys like Kurt Angle, HHH, and Jericho are a big part of the reason why WCW is no longer in business.
You can only ride stiffs like Goldberg, Luger, and DDP so far....eventually people will want to see characters with talent and personality.
What sucked so bad was WCW had talent with no personality as well. Guys like Malenko and Benoit were incredible to watch inside the ring. On the mic they were absolutey terrible. They weren't even entertaining with managers or valets.
WCW had a nice product in the late 90's. They had a great story going with the NWO, and they had tremendous talent on the upswing...they were in a perfect position to cement themselves as a legitimate long-term threat to the WWE.
But, instead of developing storylines and feuds for guys like Benoit, Guerro, Booker T, and Jericho, they pushed guys like DDP, Luger, Goldberg, and La Parka.
And what's worse is that, when they did push young talent, it was guys like Alex Wright, Disco Inferno, Norman Smiley and 3 Count.
There are no words to describe how horribly mismanaged that organization was.
The NWO had way too many members...They added a new member each week...
First it was Hall and Nash, then Hogan...then Dibiase, then Vincent, then Syxx, then the Giant, and an effing fake Sting, then Bagwell and Norton, and Big Bubba, and the freaking Great Muta, then Randy Savage...and on and on and on...ridiculous.....talk about too much of a good thing.
And they didn't learn their lesson!
Instead of dissolving the NWO, the just split it into 2 different divisions...a heel nwo, and a face nwo....horrible...
