If this is indeed true, then he would of never played football again until it was replaced. I can attest to this situation because it happened to me. Tore my ACL senior year in college. Dr's said you won't need it as long as you are not as active. Well, that didn't turn out to good. My knee kept slipping out of joint, so they had to graph a new ligament from my patella tendon. Two screws to hold it in place. It worked, but with a lot of rehab.

I had the exact same surgery..only 7-8 years after I injured it. All the torn cartilage and pieces of my ligament had osteophied by that time, turning into dozens of little razors in my knee. My doctor said it was one of the worst messes he had ever seen. I wish I had just ahead and made him do a knee replacement in hindsight. It has always hurt, at best moderate pain, and on bad days extreme and crippling. He talked me out if a replacement, saying I was too young at 35, I would have to have 3-5 replacements in my lifetime, depending on how active I was. I haven't had insurance for awhile, so I have not gotten the KR he said I should get by the time I was 42. I am going to try to get it done finally next year. At least the repair has held. It would royally suck if my knee started slipping out of joint again all the time on top of everything else. Hope yiur case ain't as bad as mine. Wouldn't wish it on any but my worst enemies...good luck to you.

basically the same thing for me, i just started earlier. i was told at 20 only thing they could do was a full KR. didn't like that idea because i still wanted to play sports.

I'm glad we're standing behind the kid. Just curious if there should be a legitimate concern about his ability to recover, play, and stay healthy? Or even worse and more importantly, could attempting to play and destroying his knee further create harsh long term problems for him?

yes to everything above. i am no doctor but dealt with this injury so i know a little more than most.

1. yes there is a serious concern about him healing. (2 on same knee is scary. yes there are physical freaks who turn out ok)
2. yes there is serious concern about his play (will it be 100%, what does it do mentally, how does 2 years off affect skill/speed/whatever)
3. yes playing could lead to long term issues. I don't know what you mean by "harsh" the leg wont fall off, but there could be more surgeries down the road, constant pain, knee replacements, etc etc. but that is all on the kids choice. him and his family need to have a heart to heart on what he wants, and hopefully the coaches can support their decision.

Constant pain is what I was referring too. I hate this for the kid. (Kid, listen to me, I'm not too much older at all.) But I work out regularly, and I used to without any kind of braces/support, and I've destroyed my joints, so I know what that constant pain can be like. That would be my biggest concern would be quality of life for him down the road. Hope this works out for everyone involved.

yeah i wish i had foregone my senior year (of HS soccer) and not dealt with this constant pain. but the way i remember it with the ACL everything is like a lightning strike. It can happen for any reason, and certain things can attract it but doesn't necessarily guarantee it happens. so pain, tear, limp whatever could just as easily happen or not, though the timing of this one seems to indicate that it will more than likely happen.

My knee recently began to feel an occasional "hanging" on the outside sometimes when I walk. Sometimes, it feels like a slight pressure, but rarely any pain. I experience no pain while lifting weights, and strength has not been compromised.

Any ideas Docs?

Hold your knee up to the computer monitor...
Turn left
Turn right
Flex
Extend... :)

Kinda catches when you walk?
Ever swell? How frequently does it happen? Daily? How many days a week?
May have a little meniscus tear, can also be a plica or synovial thickening...
Would try Motrin 3x a day for a week to start...

Pulling out plica? Lol

Agree with all. Was does it feel like when you run?

Same story for me, only it occurred in my late 20s. By waiting too long the meniscus was shredded as well because I stayed too active and waited too long. Right before the surgery the knee popping out of joint was weird - I felt no pain, just hit the ground with no warning when playing active sports. Finally got it done with the same procedure. The therapy was brutal, but worth it. That knee is now stronger than the other one, but I still have to consider that I only have about 20% of the meniscus I am supposed to have, so I limit lateral movement activities.

I am glad the staff is still committed to Devante. But this is going to be a RS deal for him coming in. He will need 2 years to get full strength after already having it done twice.

Catches when I walk sometimes. Not a total lock up or anything, but something feels different

Occurs daily for about two weeks now

No swelling or visual difference at all. Occasional slight pain, but not much

I think it is ok when I run. I run cautiously because I know something is off when I walk, but throwing frisbee with the boys, I forget and run and jump as normal.

Sometimes, it feels as if someone is applying the slightest but of finger pressure directly to the outside of the knee cap

There is not any cartilage left in my knee. Doc told me it was all torn to pieces and he had to remove it all. He said it was one of the worst he had ever seen. Niw just bones and ligaments left.
No over the counter pain killer touches my pain when it is really bad...like pissin in the ocean...luckily it doesn't hurt like that all the time.

Feel for you, bro. Understand fully and will lift you up in prayer. Strange how I could always tell the weather would be changing from how my knee felt. That part is somewhat better now. He scrapped a bunch of the arthritis out back then, but I'm sure some of it has grown back. I don't wish that pain on anybody.

Did your doc offer you the meniscus transplant option? My bones were still smooth enough, but the thought of going through another round of the therapy for something that might not work when I was just a desk jockey with weekend athlete aspirations nixed that. I don't run anymore to keep the stress down on the joint, however, I have become an avid fitness walker along with some moderate strength training that has caused no issues at all.

Let me just say that it is awesome being the only guy over 30 on VolNation with good knees. :)

Count yourself lucky. lol.

Unfortunately, Devante will never be able to make that claim. I truly feel for his situation and what he will have to do to be a VFL.

Likely a small tear meniscus.
Maybe just a little swollen (variable inflammation therefore intermittent symptoms)

Try the Motrin
If you have access to a doc there, try a steroid shot.

If you sit (floor), extend your knee, let all the muscles relax, then push the knee cap gently side to side, does it reproduce the feeling?

Btw, you never placed your knee against your monitor... :)

There's a relatively new procedure where they take stem cells and plasma rich protein and inject in knees and shoulders. The stem cells are supposed to regrow cartilage...a little Voodoo.
One of my patients had it done and has seen significant improvement in both shoulders. She has very bad shoulder arthritis and cannot have replacements due to other medical conditions.
Was pricey, but according to her, the decrease in pain alone has been worth every penny.

Not sure I am sold on this yet. But it may be worth looking into. :hi:

Glucosamine/Chondroitin sulfate
Omega 3 fish oil
Flax seed oil
Some cactus juice extracts
All natural joint lubricants and anti-inflammory substances are worth a try if you have not tried them yet. I have seen some remarkable responses in patients that cannot have surgery (many different reasons). If you haven't tried them, relatively small cost. I recommend Sam's or Costco for price. Stay away from "health food " type places as their prices are inflated universally.

Thanks Doc, :hi:

Extended leg knee slide feels normal. Still no visible swelling, so I guess that is good.

I'm currently in Knoxville, so I may see a doctor before returning to Thailand.

If it is a minor meniscus tear, given my current symptoms, would you reccomend leaving it alone or getting it worked on?

If little, a steroid shot may allow it to settle down and heal.
Really kinda depends on what they find on exam...lemme know what the diagnosis is, and what's recommended...
