'16 FL CB Tyler Byrd (UT Commit 2/2/16)

One post being 20 paragraphs long..that is long winded. One speech, or sermon or lecture that goes on and on and on...that is long winded. 100 different one liner emoji filled posts a day is not.

You get me...when you're not listening to the Cure and thinking about recruiting. :salute:

Berry is great with the ball in his hands. Byrd looks like he may have better ball skills though.

IMO Berry's best fit on offense would have been RB, but we don't have the need there like we do at WR.

I personally see a DB playing WR with Byrd at the WR position. He's got potential to be "good" at WR. At DB he can be flat out special.

Berry can catch fine and is dynamic with the ball. Would be an elite RB/playmaker tell the truth. Coaches do what they want though.

This.

I'm a fan of the regime, but my only knock is the infatuation with the WR group.

IMO, Jennings should be in his second year at safety. Byrd should be supplanting his role as a DB this year so he pushes for PT next year.

Instead, UT is going to wind up with two "good" WR instead of two playmakers in the secondary. For the life of me I don't understand why everyone else in the country can feature WR's while UT tries the committee approach.

I know this doesn't completely cover all your problems with how UT utilizes WR but I will say that a WR on the field right now is worth significantly more than a DB who isn't in the two deep today. If you start looking at next year that valuation may change. However, the word since 2013 has been that 2016 is the year.

I don't see him as an impact guy at WR. A guy like Callaway stands out immediately at WR. Byrd at WR doesn't blow me away. But at DB he looks like a flat out monster in my eyes.

Byrd could become a great WR.

BUT, his skillset for DB is so much higher. At WR he reminds me of Stephon Diggs. He starts for the Vikings now, but... hes not going to ever sign a big contract.

At CB, Byrd has the tools to write his own check. Hes somehow overshadowed Marquil Osborne, who also is a special talent.

I trust your breakdowns on the DB positions. Moving elite level DBs to WR makes me worried because either Butch is missing big time on WRs and this is requiring moving guys away from their best positions to make up for the shortfall or Butch is missing on evaluating best positions for his players. We should all remember that Butch wanted Watt at TE. While I'm sure Watt would've been a very good TE, he is an elite, elite DE.

To be sure, players move away from their high school positions regularly. But, we are dealing with best positions for our recruits.

For me, our DB depth is looking pretty good whether Byrd is there or not. I'm interested to see what position Callaway will play. It is hard for me to think that both Byrd and Callaway will be WRs. Maybe the staff thinks Callaway is the better DB prospect but that doesn't match what has been projected for him.

Jennings is a dynamic safety prospect. Looks like a DB playing WR as well.

Us not featuring WRs is crazy. Butch first year we featured North and Howard. He got away from it year after year for some odd reason. You have a depth chart for a reason, use it please Butch. If that's the case a WR doesn't even need to practice hard because he's going to play anyways like it's little league. Lol

Is Callaway playing DB now???

Have we already hashed out the number situation that ties to this? Byrd says he was going to be wearing #15. Either Jennings changes numbers/positions or Byrd isn't getting #15.

Do you expect Byrd to start, be featured, and stay in the game 90% of offensive plays? If he comes in and goes C Kirk style as a freshman than I'll gladly eat crow. I just don't see it that way.

I believe he will be in the rotation in 2016 and be mediocre in his first year largely due to opportunity. Therefore, going into year two at a different position that maximizes his ceiling as a football player for UT. Very similar to Jennings.

My stance is more about opportunity loss. Byrds contribution to the WR group in 2016 isn't going to be leaps and bounds over what Smith, PW, Jennings, Malone, Perry, Callaway, etc could do without him. Yet, he is going to miss an entire year at his best position.... Detrimental IMO.

I actually think he has the potential to be the 2nd best receiver on the team next year after Preston Williams.

His high school film at WR impressed me as much as his play at CB.

I think the staff feels really good at CB with Sutton, Martin, and Moseley. I don't think they feel quite as good at WR. Hence the move.

I do agree his highest potential is at CB. He's just about 6'0". That prototypical size for a CB but below average for a WR.

I don't know if he is or not. During his recruitment, Callaway played both DB and WR, including at the camps. I'm trying to figure out why Byrd has gotten moved since Callaway seemed to be a WR, maybe a slot guy, and UT recruited three other receivers in this class. I had thought Byrd was a DB recruit with a lot of potential. I just can't see how Byrd and Callaway both play WR when that would mean we ended up with five WRs in one class.

Or he could be great at WR, here's a concept the coaches might actually know what they are doing. Plenty of great 6'0 WR's in the nfl that was a lame comparison.
