'16 FL CB Tyler Byrd (UT Commit 2/2/16)

You've literally never seen him play football before

Sure. But I can read measurables.

Darrell Miller High School Profile - UT Football Insider

5'10" 171 lbs. Yet he only ran a 4.69 40 and had a SPARQ score of 67. That's incredibly low for a player who wants to be a corner in the SEC.

Maybe he's improved tremendously as an athlete since high school. But those numbers discouraged me during his recruitment about his overall potential.

Dude, D4H knows everything. It's science.

I don't know everything. But I do try to educate myself before giving an opinion. I didn't pull the bad athlete card outta nowhere with Darrell Miller.

I read his SPARQ score and 40 time and inferred that he lacked the athleticism to play corner at this level.

Maybe you guys should follow the 40 times and SPARQ scores of potential prospects more closesly.

Do you not think the coaches think about this kind of stuff?

@_williej08 is Willie Johnson, a 2016 WR from Harlem Heights, FL. 6' & 170lbs

Willie can play. For some reason his recruitment didn't pick up until late, but he is electric in the open field.

Can't get a clean hit on him. Home run speed.

In his senior year highlight, go to the 2:20 mark and you'll see his wiggle in the open field (you'll also see Byrd nearly track him down from the opposite side of the field)

Yea the honey badger sucks too. Numbers give you a baseline to gauge on their talent but it doesn't tell the whole story D4H. There are kids that don't have numbers that jump out at you but when the lights come on they shine. Are you a reincarnated LebVol? Just curious.

What happened to your "eye test"? Are you evaluating a player based on numbers?

40 times are 75% about who can do a track start the best. No one does track starts on a football field. If you're using 40 times as your only metric to gauge a high school kid's actual speed, you're rarely going to be right.

Per Hubbs
Elsewhere at defensive back, Tennessee received some good news as Tyler Byrd confirmed that he will indeed visit Tennessee next weekend with Carlin Fils-aime. The turning point here is Larry Scott.

Scott and Byrd are very close and have been so for quite some time. If Tennessee were to pull off the upset and land the very talented athlete, a majority of the credit will have to go to him.

Byrd is scheduled to be at Miami this weekend for an official visit, but there are some who believe that if he indeed makes the trip to Knoxville next weekend he will do so with genuine interest in what the Vols have to offer

Physical attributes and measureables are part of the eye test. If you're small and can't run fast, I doubt you're any good. Especially at a position that requires great athleticism like corner.

I may not care much for college stats. But I do care about numbers put up at the combine.

Lol I'm chuckling to myself thinking how this kids recruitment sounds somewhat like Hardmans. Players is super close with a coach, and so he considers following the coach to wherever that coach lands a job.

But I would not complain if we landed this kid because of coach scott.

I do agree with you somewhat. I was surprised at how badly the coaching staff wanted Miller based just on the numbers. I would be somewhat surprised if he ever really nails down a permanent starting position because I feel that Tennessee already has more talented players at corner from just a physical standpoint.

However, Denis Rogan wasn't the most talent or fast guy at corner at all. He did give up a few plays here and there....probably because of that, but he did hold his own against Julio Jones. Maybe they liked Miller because he is a smart player and knows exactly how to position himself to not give up plays?

I wouldn't be so sure ab that. Lived in Miami when Hurricanes were at the top & attendance was pathetic.

This.

Even in their heyday, the only sure fire sell outs were FSU and Notre Dame. If there was a top 10 matchup, those would pull big crowds but no guarantees of a sell-out. Other games would have a lot of empty seats...and I mean a lot.

You mean the same staff who brought in Lemond Johnson, Riyhad Jones, and Dontavius Blair? that staff?

Lemond Johnson and Riyhad Jones were takes in Jones' first class when he had 2 months to recruit. It's not even comparable. Can't believe that got 3 likes. Blair was a miss, but everyone wanted him.

Let's go with Von Pearson, Owen Williams, Chris Weatherd, Coleman Thomas, Josh Dobbs, and Ethan Wolf to support my argument.

I understand the concerns about Mullers athleticism and kind of feel like we wouldn't be pursuit a other CB late in Th game if he was gay good. But also, there have been plenty of 4.6-4.7 DBs who have done just fine in the SEC.

I don't think anyone is questioning his sexuality here.
