I'd guess it happens a lot. Fans would just rather think we're always in it, till the guy commits to another school. There are tons of recruits where you're just wasting your time. Much the same way coaches say what recruits want to hear, recruits do the same thing which leads to coaches wasting a lot of time.

He has done it plenty of times when prospect clearly is wasting his time. He will put max effort and if it's not working he moves on. At some point you have to move on or you risk hurting your program
