'16 NC RB BJ Emmons

Unless this is the same requirement for every HS student to get into any University, then this is complete crap! Why should any athlete have to be a better student than any other student? Don't get me wrong, I think those who waste their opportunity and don't get a degree are making a big mistake, but an athlete shouldn't be held to a higher academic standard than anybody else.

I would agree if they were all getting it for free. A 2.3 gpa with a low ACT would have a tough time getting paid to go to UT or to get in. Requiring a 2.3 is not that high a standard in my opinion.

I was wondering same thing. I do not get where anyone said Georgia is out, only that coach said he is openly looking around, which would make me think Georgia is going to have to recruit him all over. I hope he comes here, but I would rather him go to Georgia over Alabama.

Multiple uga posters on this site have stated that Thomas Brown moved on from him once he was hired.

I believe Emmons himself was even quoted at point saying he had not heard from Brown.

247 lists Georgia as a "soft" commit and Tennessee as "warm".

Not a single uga homer has a CB in for him, and he's technically committed.

His HS coach even gave the classic - "oh yea, he's still committed to Georgia right now, but he's looking around..."

I'd say it's highly unlikely that he signs with Georgia at this point.

Ok, I did not know any of the info other than what was in that link. Thanks, I hope he chooses to come here. :crossfingers:

Ga is talking to him again. I get the feeling his grades must be attainable because TN led the charge then UGA contacted him again and now bama offers

Georgia may well have re-engaged given the improvement in his grades, but they definitely shut down all communication at one point.

Hope BJ remembers who stood by, and who turned their back, when he was down.

Are you kidding?

They aren't getting paid to go to school. They are getting free school to spend 20+ hours a week as a part of an entertainment product which produces millions of dollars for the university.

Regular students aren't a profit deal for the university.

an ever increasing tuition begs to differ. and this is simply forgetting the grad students who work on various grants and can pull in some big money to the university. universities make money without athletics and usually athletics is a drag on the university. you might want to check your statement. I worked on a project which brought in a couple million to UT. I was one of 100 or so but we definitely brought in money. this also ignores that a lot of successful alum donate directly to the university instead of the athletic department.

A group of 85 scholarship athletes just raked in $21 million in SEC Network dollars alone. In one season. I don't really know what you two are arguing because I didn't go back and read. But is the point of contention the irrelevance of sports to a university?

no he said normal students don't make the university money.

And I stand behind that statement...your reference is to grad students. My eldest is a grad student at a much more respected university than UT. He goes tuition, room and board for free and gets some pocket money to boot. His department of study gets large grant money for the university. He is absolutely not the normal student.

You just want to argue as the facts are clear here.

You made a blanket statement which was blatantly false, i have first hand experience with it being false and I called you on it. Now football player definitely generates more money for the school than probably all but the top 'earning' grad school students, that i have no problem with. You said that the universities don't profit from normal students, which is not true in this day and age.

Recruiting students with superior academic scores couldn't possibly help the school financially unless they turn out to be the next Bill Gates or CEO of Nike. Just ask Oregon.

Well, recruiting better students leads to a better reputation for the school, which helps recruit more reputable professors, which leads to better endowments for research projects, which potentially leads to patents and discoveries by said faculty...which the school owns at least a portion of...and thus, gets some of the proceeds from. Additionally, a good percentage of scholarships come from private funding, so they aren't taking money out of the school's pocket. Instead, the money is coming from that scholarship's reserve.

3. UGA coaching change opened up things: “I certainly think there were some issues there,” Allen said. “I will say this about Coach McClendon: BJ loves and respects Coach McClendon. And in the short amount of time that he has gotten to know Coach Brown, he certainly respects him a lot. In the short amount of time I’ve gotten to talk to Coach Brown, he has been a true professional. I know that he’s going to do a great job at Georgia. Did that (coaching change) play some part of it? I’d be a liar if I sat here and said ‘No.’ I think there was some uncertainty to where BJ stood in the recruiting process, in terms of the shuffling of coaches. There was a little bit of lapse there (after the coaching change). I don’t know for certain how or why exactly that lapse happened in the process of it all. But there was uncertainty there for BJ and his family with what was going on. We wanted to make sure that he was being treated fairly. After speaking with Georgia, I certainly believe everything they told me. I have no reason to doubt them. But with that happening and with other colleges stepping in, that has piqued BJ’s interest. He just wants to make sure ‘Is Georgia the right place for me? Or are there better options for me?’ When you think about Georgia, you think about the top running backs that have had come out of there. They do a phenomenal job at Georgia. They’re going to be fighting for the SEC championship every year. It’s a top-tier program. I think it’s a wonderful place, and it’s a great opportunity for any young man. But I’m going to leave this up to BJ, and I will support him with whatever he and his family decide.”

4. Meeting the new UGA coach: Thomas Brown stopped by Freedom High School this spring. “He and I talked while (he was checking on BJ),” Allen said. “It was a good opportunity to sit down and speak. I found out where everything stood with BJ. Coach Brown certainly feels very strongly about BJ, and about wanting BJ at Georgia. There was no denying that. He was a true professional. When he walked out of the room, I knew I was speaking to somebody who was a great ‘character’ coach, somebody that I felt like would be a good fit for BJ to work and learn under. If that’s BJ’s choice to go to Georgia, I think he will be playing for a great coach.”

-ajc this was the direct quotes from his coach

You can't put in a CB for the school they are already committed to, on any prospect.

They could have prior to his commitment.

Rusty Mansell CB's every kid with an offer to Georgia, so does Rowe.

None of them put one in for Emmons

My point is a student with a 2.3 will not get scholarship money. A player with a 2.3 will get money so not the end of the world if you have to have a 2.3.

I think the Emmons commit was kind of out of the blue. As for Rusty, he only did 40 CB total last year and only 21 this year. I'm sure they've offered more than 21 guys but I get your point, I'm just saying they can't pick UGa.

As for the High School HC and him getting excited that Bama offered, well, most HC's do when Bama offers. Albert Means coach did (cough, cough).

Camp is wrapping up in Knoxville and we just talked to Brent on our way back to Knoxville from Baltimore and he says BJ Emmons is on campus. Another visit for the UGA RB commitment from North Carolina who was also in Knoxville back in the spring.

Athletes do not have to meet the same admissions requirements that regular students do. Comparing apples and oranges.
