'16 NJ QB Jarrett Guarantano (Vols commit 4/15/2015)

HOW DOES GUARANTANO FIT IN?

While Tennessee's former class of 2016 quarterback commitment Austin Kendall looked like a good fit for Tennessee's offense under Butch Jones, Guarantano seems like he may be the best fit.

The 6-foot-3.5, 185-pound signal caller can do damage with both his arm and his legs and his equally deadly utilizing either.

Guarantano posses a big frame and with that comes a big arm. He's shown his ability to push the ball down the field when he's had time to set his feet. He's still maturing as a quarterback in terms of accuracy, but the lack in that part of his game could come from from his lack of time sitting in the pocket as he's usually on the run.

And just because he's scrambling a good bit doesn't mean it's necessarily a bad thing. Guarantano's tape shows an excellent ability to make plays with either his arm or legs while on the run. The ability to make something from seemingly nothing is certainly a good trait.

Now, there will need to be some development, but Guarantano has a big arm, great mobility and speed for the quarterback position. With the way Joshua Dobbs helped breath new life in Jones' offense this past fall, it's hard to find a better fit for what Tennessee wants in the class of 2016.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR TENNESSEE?

It means, if the Vols do indeed sign Guarantano, that for the first time since Butch Jones took on the Tennessee job he will have signed a quarterback in consecutive classes. Even though the Vols have been able to take multiple quarterbacks in two classes, that's usually not the best way to build depth.

So, long term, despite the Vols signing three quarterbacks last year, adding one in this class was pivotal as Tennessee needed to begin to space out its quarterbacks, unless they wanted to face having to have freshmen backup quarterbacks every year.

It also means the Vols can start seriously targeting the class of 2017 quarterbacks and even beyond. Tennessee has hosted Hunter Johnson on several occasions and the Indiana quarterback is likely to be one of the top five quarterbacks in the class of 2017.

It also gives Tennessee coaches a quarterback to point to when recruiting wide receivers, a major need for this class. Whether it's Diondre Overton, Jeff George, Kyle Davis, Mecole Hardman, Donnie Corley or any of the Vols' other top wideout targets, Tennessee can point to a big name with a big game as the man who could be getting them the ball in a few years.

SCOUTING REPORT ON GUARANTANO

Now let's hear from Mid-Atlantic Recruiting Analyst Adam Friedman for a breakdown on Guarantano:

"He's got incredible arm, a ton of arm strength, and he's accurate when able to set his feet. He's a dangerous runner and kept his team in the game and even won some games by his running ability alone. He's able to make a lot of plays with his feet whether that's on move throwing the ball or just running.

"Comparing him to a quarterback he really looks a lot like Joshua Dobbs. He has a similar game. He can run but has a bigger arm and makes smart decisions. He had some interceptions last season but they weren't necessarily bad throws. His receivers dropped the ball, getting tipped at the line, things like that. But, he's a good decision maker.

"He has a compact throwing motion, he just needs to set feet and throw the ball and he will get better at that. He was on the run most of last year so didn't get see that because he was having to make more plays with his feet."

In a move that should surprise no one, Butch Jones' uncanny ability to build, develop and maintain interpersonal relationships ranked at the very top of factors in why coveted, nationally acclaimed quarterback Jarrett Guarantano verbally committed Wednesday to Jones' University of Tennessee football program.

What similarly isn't surprising but perhaps not as well known is the impact the past 10 weeks of the Vols' new offensive coordinator, Mike DeBord, and his work in Guarantano's recruitment.

As soon as DeBord was formally tapped to replace the departed Mike Bajakian, who shared a common thread with Guarantano as a Bergen Catholic product but had trended toward Austin Kendall, DeBord went feverishly to work.

The former Michigan offensive coordinator and NFL assistant spent one of his first weekends on the job examining quarterback film of the signal-callers on the 2016 board. What DeBord saw, according to folks familiar with proceedings, left him enamored with Guarantano.

Already reinvigorated with a chance to help his former disciple Jones, DeBord made Guarantano Priority No. 1. They talked on the phone; DeBord thought nothing of chasing anyone out of his office if guests were on hand for an interview or talking shop whenever Guarantano called.

Jones, meanwhile, leaned not only upon his longstanding relationship with James 'Jim' Guarantano, a Rutgers Football Hall of Famer who played under Jones while Jones was a graduate assistant for the Scarlet Knights, but his fastidious attention to detail.

Guarantano's most recent visit to Rocky Top coincided with the opening round of the NCAA Women's Tournament, and Jones knew that Victoria Guarantano, Jarrett's younger sister, loves the game. So the Guarantanos bought their tickets, and Jones, DeBord and the ever-steady Bob Welton all were right there watching the Lady Vols cruise to their opening-round win.

Moreover, there are stories of how Jones would speak by phone to the family --- dismissing idle chatter with Jarrett to get the latest from Victoria. Certainly, when the Guarantano family visited Knoxville the correct names --- Jim, Karen, Jarrett, Victoria --- were on the guest passes, which according to scuttle wasn't always the case in other spots.

"I think my relationship with Coach Butch had a bigger impact because my dad has known him for a while and really does trust him," Guarantano told Rivals.com. "Coach Bajakian being around a lot back in the contact period really did make a difference with how I looked at the school and that type of offense."

Still, this is about fit and a comfort in that fit because of the relationships. Jones' respect for and standing with the Guarantanos always kept Tennessee a factor in Jarrett's recruitment.

Yet it was DeBord's "old-fashioned relationship, building it by sitting down and talking with the family and talking football" with the prized prospect that soothed any concerns or doubts.

Sure, on this day the Vols "beat" both Ohio State and Rutgers to earn Guarantano's pledge. But those three schools already had stood out from among 31 others who had offered the strong-armed, athletic 6-foot-4 signal-caller; Tennessee just happened to work its way to landing the commitment and sending Ohio State scrambling for a player ranked lower on its board in the process.

Plenty questioned Jones' --- and his staff's --- ability to recruit at the SEC level a mere 28 months ago when he was appointed to revive Rocky Top, but since 2014 --- his first full class --- Jones now has signed or gotten pledges from 39 Rivals.com four- and five-stars. Moreover, Guarantano is the second-straight significant triumph against the Buckeyes, who charged hard in late-January and early-February in their attempts to sway promising offensive lineman prospect Venzell Boulware.

There, of course, will be future recruiting disappointments. It is inevitable, and Tennessee can't seek to win at a greater level on the field to further some additional recruiting efforts until the 2015 season kicks off in less than five months.

Jones & Co, however, are continuing to position the Vols for a resurgence both now and in the future.

Imagine the relationships that could bloom from that if they succeed.

Said in a rivals video interview that he's going hard after: Kareem Walker, Rashan Gary, Jordan Fuller, and Ahmir Mitchell. All from NJ.
Yeah...he has every reason to try and recruit some elite talent at RB and WR, so by the time he starts, Hurd and Kamara's departure won't leave him devoid of talent in their spots.

I love the VQ dig at Urban about scrambling for a QB farther down their board. I don't doubt Butch was sending a message through them with that line.

Jennings to safety, redshirt either Jones or Dormady. Redshirt Guarantano next year. We're set at qb for 6 years.

CBJ will bring in at least 1 QB a year from here on out so that we're never in the position where we are now that if the starting QB goes down, he has to depend on a Freshman QB backup.

What are the odds that JG moves up in the rankings with a great senior season?

His highlight film is incredible but his stats aren't. However, you can clearly tell he's one of the best QB prospects in a very long time. Would a solid senior season be enough to bump him up to 5* status? It looks like he has all the tools to get there from a physical standpoint.

After watching Jarrett Guarantano's junior highlights 3 times now, I am convinced that he is a future superstar with unlimited potential. I firmly believe that if he stays healthy and sticks to his commitment, he will be a long-term starter.

If you haven't seen his film, I highly recommend you do so.

With a name like Guarantano, he's going to need a nickname that rolls a little easier off the tongue. Lets get creative and see what we can come up with.

To start, I nominate the nickname "Gizmo"

I also like "Inspector Gadget" since he seems to have the tools to escape any situation, no matter how dire it may seem!

And as far as New Jersey goes, ever smell that smell on the other side of the bridge from Manhattan. That's New Jersey. . .

I don't know of a nickname but I'm just going to reiterate what the OP said about the highlight vids. If anyone hadn't seen them I highly recommend it.

Aside from having a cannon for an arm, the kid is a tank. He's big and fast and very hard to bring down.
