'16 TN ATH Gabe Angel

This is huge for Cookeville, CHS already has a great upcoming junior class who went undefeated in middle school and now add this kid into the mix.

Gabe Angel, RB/TE, Cookeville (Tenn.) High (Class of 2016) – Angel is a unique athlete who has all kinds of size but still moves well, has quickness and catches the ball naturally. He’s starting to transition into more of a tight end role after previously being seen as a running back and it fits him well. -247 Sports

“I just like Coach Jones and what he’s doing,” said Angel, who claims offers from Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Ole Miss and Mississippi State. “Of course, he had a great recruiting class this past year, so he’s definitely got things going in the right direction. I think they’ll continue to build off that, and they should have a good year this year during the season.”

“(Elder is) just staying on me hard and everything,” Angel said. “He wants me to come up there as much as I can for visits and stuff, just so I can get around the guys and hang around them and get used to the coaches.”

“I mean, I played running back this year, but we ran a wing-T, so I’d play the wing. And then we’d go to, like, ‘gun stuff and I’d be in the slot. That’s what I did this year. I won’t be in the wing-T next year, but it’ll be similar. I’ll probably play running back and receiver.”

Spoke about his position, and like many believe, his future appears to be at TE.

Was at Junior Day last weekend...

"It was good. Getting back up here and being around the coaches and building on that relationship we started was good," Angel said. "I got to talk to the coaches more and it was more laid back and relaxed than it was in the season. It was a better atmosphere because they weren't have to worry about a game. It was good."

"I actually got to go in and talk to coach Jones," Angel said. "He just said he wanted me up here at Tennessee and that he loved me and that it was a big family up here and they want me."

Angel has been no stranger around Tennessee the last few years as he received an offer after his freshman season. Angel has been to several games, several junior days and spring practices and was at last years' spring game.

"I'm getting more comfortable here, definitely. I'm learning more and more about them every time (he visits)," Angel said. "I like that it's close to home and I like coach Jones and I like what he's doing here. I like his message and what he tells us."

Angel plans to be back in Knoxville for a spring practice at some point.

Is Hooker legit when it comes to recruiting. That would be another huge pickup for '16. I always considered him a longshot no matter what because of his Vandy ties.

Hooker is clown shoes when it comes to actual info. He's a less-entertaining, slightly more informed (debatable) version of Basilio.

That being said, I've gotten the impression that Gabe likes Tennesseee a lot from things I've read. This despite his family loyalties to Vandy. With JF gone, his family is doing him a disservice from a football standpoint by steering him to Vandy.

“(Jones) was just telling me that he loves me and wants me to come up here and play for him,” Angel told IT. “That’s what we talk about every time, how he wants me. And that effort isn’t wasted. I know that and it means a lot. I know I’m wanted. It was a really good talk.”

“I just like how coach Jones is doing things up here,” Angel told IT. “I like him and his staff. Like, I like them a lot. They’re turning things around here and I just like being around those guys.”

His whole family are not Vandy fans. He has Tennessee fans that are his cousins

It is an impossibility that an entire family could be Vandy fans. Somebody is always the voice of reason.

That would also require a very small family, considering Vandy has about five fans. Is he related to Clay?

Attended UT's practice today. He was recently on campus over a week ago for a Junior Day per VQ.

Starting to really like our chances here.

I agree. Really hope the staff can close the deal with this kid. Will be a huge get for 2016 if they can sign him.

Honestly, I'm cool with not taking a TE in the '15 class. Ellis is a Sophomore, and then Wolf and Helm are here. That would free up a spot and give us a great pitch for Gabe.

"Angel has been a top draw at camps since last spring and at each stop his stock has improved. After deciding to switch to tight end from running back Angel really opened eyes to his ability at the Under Armour Underclassmen Combine in St. Petersburg, Fla., in January. He's looking for a repeat performance on Sunday."
