Wasn't annual talks Dooley's recruiting method?
"It's been kinda alright talking to ya (insert name here). Please don't call me back. We'll talk again after ya sign with us in Feberaree. Maybe..."
-Derek Doolz

Not sure how that didn't work

I remember reports from walk-ons, that Dooley didn't speak to them or even know their names.

Butch was literally memorizing the roster before he spoke to the team

A good friend of mine who played as a walk on (Nick Jackson) said that Dooley was the biggest @$$hole he had ever met. Made a play in practice and smiled a Dooley who replied "you're a walk on, you'll never see the field."

From what I've heard Dooley didn't talk to anyone without an appointment. Former UT football players usually didn't get invited in for anything. There was no reason to learn names of players when the only reason he had to talk to them was when he spoke to them about their shower habits.

Chik-fil-a Nugget of the Day from 247...

“I know I have a lot more offers coming in. I wouldn’t put a big top three or something on that yet just because of that,” said Williams, who’s ranked the nation’s No. 129 overall prospect and No. 12 cornerback in the 247Sports Composite for the 2016 class.

“When I know I’m completely done getting offers, I’ll stop. I’ll be like, ‘OK, I’m deciding now.’”

“I’m probably going to go down to Florida State this year, and then I really want to go out to the West Coast,” Williams said. “I just want to go far. … There’s a lot of schools I still want to visit. I want to visit Michigan State and Penn State, and probably Ohio State, too. They offered me, too, so that was pretty cool. I kind of want to visit all three of those.”

“Most consistently would be, like, in no order, LSU, Tennessee, Florida State, Vandy, Alabama and Auburn,” he said. “I talk to Penn State a lot because a teammate, (Tyler) Shoop, his dad is (Nittany Lions assistant coach Bob) Shoop. I talk to Michigan State a lot, too.”

“We talked about the game Saturday night (at South Carolina). That game was hype. We talked about the game, and we were talking about how the Midstate players were making a huge impact,” Williams said, referring to the Vols’ 45-42 overtime win over the Gamecocks.

“We were talking about Midstate players and how they’ve got billboards,” Williams added, referring to new billboards in the Nashville area that show Tennessee’s eight true freshmen from Middle Tennessee. “I actually saw one. It was talking about the Midstate players at UT and all that stuff.

“First, Coach Jones sent me a picture of it, and I was like, ‘Oh, that’s cool.’ I’m guessing it’s in Knoxville. And then i saw it in Nashville, like, driving on the interstate, so I was like, ‘All right, then.’ I like that a lot. That’s really cool, how they appreciate their Midstate guys.”

“They’re really a great team,” he said. “They’re up-and-coming. They’ve got, like, 22 freshmen playing, so just imagine when they’re sophomores and juniors. They’ve already got all the experience.”

RowlandRIVALS: Rivals100 DB JoeJuan Williams says he'll go to the FSU-Boston College game, as well as the Vandy-Tennessee game. @VandySportscom @Warchant

Good, he'll see the passion of Big Orange fans as we pile into Dudley Field. We'll stack up like cord wood in there.

There's some uneasiness this week in the Midstate, as LSU reports to Nashville for its Music City Bowl berth opposite Notre Dame. The Vols and the Tigers are neck-and-neck for Phillips, Amadi, Martin and 2016 standout JoeJuan Williams. LSU practices in Nashville on Sunday; it will be interesting to see who the spectators are. It should be noted that any practice attendees at any bowl site cannot visit with coaches.

Is it possible that lsu pulled strings to be in the music city bowl? I mean there were a ton of bowl games they could have been placed in. Just wondering, because it's very weird that billboards went up and that at least four recruits they're trying to close with are from the area.

If by pulled strings you mean intentionally arranged to have an awful enough season (for them) to land them in the MCB, then no, I don't think that happened.

I know it's a stretch to think they could have the ability to influence their bowl game with any other way than how they played, but that is what i meant. I certainly did not say or mean to say they played worse on purpose and don't know how that's what you took from my post. C'mon man, I'm not that intellectually challenged.

I think he was trying to make a joke. Certain institutions definitely get preference in bowl selections. It is not far-fetched to think LSU could have put MCB towards the top of the list based on potential recruiting benefits.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the team ranks their preference 1-3. I could see LSU wanting in Nashville. They were not going to be in a top tier bowl and Nashville gives them an edge in what's left on their recruiting board. And Music City Bowl loves to have them due to their fans traveling so well.

I hate Notre dame but a ass kicking against LSU would be nice. I can't believe I'm saying that

You are not but the real question is he?

That's what i figured. But if you're not that funny, then you come off as serious. So i figured I'd answer as if he were.

Your answer is definitely helpful though. I wonder if we had won a game or two more if we would have been able to get that bowl. I can't see how the taxslayer bowl could have been more beneficial to us than Nashville, considering the huge emphasis butch has put on instate recruiting.

Yes i always root against nd, but i agree. If it means the difference between us getting those players, i wouldn't mind an sec loss in that game.
