'16 TN OL Ryan Johnson (UT Commit 7/19/14)

“i’m all in,” said johnson, who’s ranked the nation’s no. 277 overall prospect and the no. 5 player from tennessee in the 247sports composite for the 2016 class. “i believe in coach (butch) jones fully, and i think he’s a great coach. I think he’s doing great things, and i think he’s really going to lead us a long way.

“i think we’re going to end up winning championships, and i'm going to be a part of that. And i think we’re really close there. I think we’re really close to being on top, and that’s what i’m looking forward to.

“i think we’re really close, and i think all we’re missing is one little key element.”

Yup, an Oline.

I honestly do not believe that is our weakest link at this point in time. I think that unit has improved tremendously, and I think Debord is the one to give credit to. WR unit and DB unit are weaker links at this point, IMO.

Agreed. Azzani's is a great recruiter but he has been turning 5* receivers into 2*s since he got here

I'm not defending Azzani, but the receivers haven't actually had but a few catchable balls a game. I have no idea if he's a good coach or not, but Dobbs is a horrendous passer

Don't really know what to think...Nick Marshall was equally horrendous but Auburn had a passing attack.

OVERALL TRAITS
Size-Strength-Athleticism
Prospect with excellent height and adequate bulk, but has a frame that can continue to be developed and support additional needed good mass. Demonstrates very good playing strength with room to improve as he further physically develops.

Pass Protection
Displays enough balance stay in front of a defender once locked on and when he stays low. Can get hands on, but doesn't display a powerful punch and can continue to improve placement. Can be a beat slow to set and flashes an effective kick step, but needs to be more consistent in set and pad level.

Run Blocking
When he gets locked on and drives his legs can generate push off the ball. Does need to work to improve hand placement as well as improve pad level as he can play high and struggle to generate movement or get overextended and fall off blocks. Displays good athleticism for size and can improve angles, but displays ability to be effective second level blocker.

Toughness
Lineman that displays a physical nature and will come back in on plays and deliver some big hits as a blocker, but would like to see him better sustain and initially finish more consistently on blocks.

Bottom Line
Johnson is a tackle prospect with some good raw tools, but at this stage is not fully maximizing them and can be inconsistent. We don't see an early contributor and feel he could benefit from a red-shirt to further develop physically and technically, but does display ability to develop into a good starting OT at Power-5 level.

Underclassman Eval
STRENGTHS: Johnson is an athletic lineman who has the raw talent to develop into a very talented player. Strong upper body and long arms help keep edge rushers to the outside when protecting his QB. Good footwork and will work to get into the second level and make blocks downfield. ...
AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT: Can add more weight to his long frame. Needs to watch pad level as he can get tall and slide or blocks and we don%u2019t see consistent hip roll at contact. ...
BOTTOM LINE: Johnson has the tools to do it all. With more game experience and physical maturity, he could become a productive player at college level.

Richmond, Hall, Blair, Kendrick and possibly Sanders move to OT. Yeah.. Johnson will play

Sanders hasn't played OT since he's been here, Blair is turrible, and Kendrick was close to transfering before the season (not sure how he'll respond if he's beaten out by Hall and Richmond in the spring).

There's a chance Johnson could be in the two deep I'd say. It probably depends on if we land any other OTs this class. We're still short on depth at OT.

Kendrick is not a tackle... See Kyberson

If Kerbyson is any proof Kendrick can become solid at the position.

This.

Kendrick is a RS soph that began the season as the starting RT. Posters say they believe in Butch, then in the next breath they say a player can't do what he clearly was able to do that Butch believed he could do. If anything, Kendrick is the next Kerbyson with the ability to play multiple positions as needed. Hopefully, since the talent has been upgraded he may not be asked to do all Kerbyson's had to do.

I wasn't saying it sarcastically. I was saying that Johnson will play because of the guys I listed

Ah, I misunderstood your post. My bad.

As for the other posters talking about Kendrick, he definitely is an OT. If he improves as much over the remainder of his career at OT as Kerbyson has, he'll be a solid contributor and may have a shot at getting drafted. He has all the measurables. He just needs to improve his craft at the position.

I hope he's able to do all that as a backup...Hall's better.
