Several months after picking up a Tennessee offer, Johnson knew he wanted to be a Vol. In all actuality, it was likely much earlier than that that Johnson wanted to play for the Vols as he grew up a fan of the Big Orange. But, in July of 2014 he became the big brick to start out the class of 2016. That didn't slow down the offers as Johnson added one from Alabama and several other schools. But, Johnson remained committed to Butch Jones and recruited for the Vols throughout the process.
