'17 GA CB/S Shawn Shamburger (UT signee)

In the one deep up front, it seems like it.But depth would be big issue for the front, IMO.

McKenzie and Johnson are the only DTs we have with NG size (though if they keep Mosley there he could probably play NG if the emphasis was on eating blocks and holding ground). Smith and Taylor could probably fit that OLB spot well and Bituli might be able to play there also, but who do we have there after that?

As things stand, we have some DEs that can slide inside and play the 3 technique in a 4-3 in a pinch. But we also have some smaller DTs like Picou and Vickers (along with most of the freshman we're bringing in there) who wouldn't really fit most 3-4 schemes very well at all.

I know this is all hypothetical, but it's fun to think about. A great 3-4 DC (like Aranda at LSU) who is willing to adapt his scheme to the pieces he has to work with could probably make it work. Not sure most DCs could take our defense and have them playing a 3-4 at a very high level year one though.
Picou and vickers could both play strong side DE in a 3-4. True, Kmac and Johnson could all play NG.
So, yes, the personnel would fit a 3-4 well, especially with these undersized ends in Taylor and Smith being moved to OLB.

Yeah it really depends on the type of 3-4. Of course a great coordinator could make it work in theory.

I think that on paper, our personnel could fit a 3-4. But I don't see the depth for it in practice. McKenzie has the measurables to play up front in any scheme at DT, but Mosley probably would only be any good as a space eater in a two gap scheme.

Vickers and Picou might have the size to play DE in a one gap scheme, but those guys wouldn't excel if they were having to play two gaps and eat up blockers.

Smith and Taylor would fit as 3-4 OLBs, IMO. But who backs them up? Bituli is the only guy that really comes to mind as a possibility, but he might be needed inside.

I think it's one of those things that makes sense in theory but probably wouldn't hold up to the rigors of a dull season.

Playing Tuttle at nose tackle would be a waste and a crime against humanity. He's not a space eater. I have no idea what he could do as a 3-4 DE but I would love to see it.

I think the difference between a 3-4 and 4-3 might be the smallest it's ever been. With the amount of time most teams spend in the nickel, and how creative most teams get in sending pressure it's all about getting talent on the field.

“It kind of caught me off guard. I wasn’t expecting that to happen,” Shamburger said. “Going into it, I was thinking he was going to be there when I got there — Coach Martinez was.

“But as far as it goes, I know it’s a business and I know business decisions have to be made, and what’s best for the players and what’s best for the team. So I feel like Coach knows what he’s doing, and I’m just going to stick behind him regardless.”

Tennessee is not going to change form a 4--3 to a 3--4 defense. Where do you guys get this stuff? Most of the time we're in a 4--2--5 anyway. When we get the staff changes complete, we'll be fine.

I think most of us were just enjoying the hypothetical Xs and Os of it all.

I agree its intriguing but i agree with some of the other posters that, while we have the linemen for it and i would LOVE to see phillips/kongbo, Kmac and Tuttle in a 3-4, I dont know if we have the LB depth to fill it out. Heck we struggled last year to find TWO Lb's to be able to play well when our injuries occurred. Now if mcdowell and Kirkland are healthy, Bryant or bates finally step up, and we play darrel taylor or bituli in a hybrid role that could be fun. But thats a lot of ifs.

We aren't physical enough for it. IMO

How about some information on Shawn Cheeseburger in this thread. Nevermind, that would make too much senseC
