Looking at this are we better suited personnel wise for a 3-4 defense (Alabama)?
DE Kyle Phillips
NG Kahlil McKenzie
DE Jonathan Kongbo
JACK Darrell Taylor
SLB Austin Smith
MLB Darrin Kirkland Jr
WLB Cortez McDowell
CB Justin Martin
SS Todd Kelly Jr.
FS Nigel Warrior
CB Micah Abernathy (move back to corner)
STAR RaShaan Gaulden
Phillips is a terrible fit to be a 3-4 DE. Our LBs have been a huge weakness so adding an extra on the field won't help
Phillips is carrying around 15 lbs of bad weight. No way he's strong enough to take on extra blockers to free up the LBs. There's no depth at DT for a 3-4, the LBers are small and built for speed. It'd be a disaster trying to switch overPhillips who moved to DT last year? Not sure why he wouldnt be a good fit for a 3-4 defense. Hes physical, athletic and big enough now weighing 275-280 that he bulked up to last year to play DT.
Out LBs wasnt the complete problem with our Defense, imo the problem started losing our top 3 interior lineman. With players like Smith and Sapp coming back off of inquiries add them with our vets like McDowell, Kirkland, Berry, Bates and Jumper thats a very solid and deep group. Not to mention are young players like Taylor, Bituli, Blakely and McDaniel who can all play OLB for depth.
DE: Phillips 275, Vickers 295 Mixon 270
DT: McKenzie 325, Alexis Johnson 295, Mosley 340, Pual Bain 300 who I know everyone likes to joke about but played good in his limited actions
DE: Kongbo 280, Tuttle 311 when fully heathy starting, Picou 277
IMO very solid depth with not even including this year recruiting class
