The 6-3, 197-pounder has, for the most part, narrowed his focus to the Fighting Irish and Tennessee. Johnson visited South Bend back in June for the Irish Invasion and some people believe Notre Dame pulled ahead for the five-star recruit. However, he then made a trip to Knoxville on July 25, where the Volunteers likely grabbed a slight lead.
That said, Johnson maintains that there isnt one leader quite yet.
I think its right there with Notre Dame and Tennessee right now, said Johnson. Its really, really, really close.
When asked if he has made a silent pledge to either program and hes simply waiting to announce publicly, he replied, No, I havent committed.
Notre Dame knows its in a tight battle with Tennessee and the plan is to get Johnson back on campus sooner rather than later. Following Brownsburgs 55-34 loss to Pike Friday night, Johnson discussed whats next for him regarding the Irish.
Not really sure, said Johnson regarding a return trip to Notre Dame. Yeah, weve definitely been talking with them about coming back, but were not sure yet. [Offensive coordinator] Mike Sanford was thinking about the home opener or as soon as we could. My guess, we would probably go to the Northwestern home opener [Sept. 5, instead of the Notre Dame-Texas game] because its my brothers home opener, but were not sure.
Im going to keep talking to my family. We feel really good where were at. No timetable yet.
Johnson made it clear that a trip is in the works. However, a date has not been etched in stone. It could come at any point before Notre Dames first home game or shortly after. He continues to talk regularly with Sanford about those plans.
Yeah, weve been talking with Sanford, said Johnson. Were probably going to get there. He really wants me to get there and be around the quarterbacks and so, I was really thinking about doing that.
At this point, Johnson and Sanford couldnt have a better relationship. The two are extremely close and Johnson feels comfortable with everything about Notre Dame.
Its more me and [Sanford] talking about him and [head] Coach [Brian] Kelly and the way they run their offense, said Johnson regarding his talks with Sanford. Really, they want me to get there around the quarterbacks and to see for myself what they like about Notre Dame.
One rumor thats been circulating recently is that Johnson is looking for the best fit athletically and finding the school that allows him the best opportunity to play early. Some believe that depth chart is going to play a heavy factor in his recruitment. However, Johnson was quick to shoot down those thoughts.
Really, you cant really go to a school because of the depth chart, said Johnson. You have to go to a school you want to go to and be confident in yourself that youre going to beat those guys out. I dont know if depth chart is a problem for me. There is going to be guys everywhere I go, no matter where I go.
Although Tennessee took an early commit from class of 2016 four-star quarterback Jarrett Guarantano, most people thought that it crushed Notre Dames chances with Johnson when the Irish took 2016 three-star quarterback Ian Book earlier this month. It caught Johnson slightly off guard, but similar to what he mentioned above, it doesnt impact his decision.
It might have been a little bit surprising, said Johnson regarding the Book commitment. [Sanford] said [Book] was going to come to campus and he just said he committed on the spot. You know, it is what it is. With the relationship [Sanford and I] have, he always told me they might take a 2016 quarterback, so I kind of always knew that in the back of my head.
Again, Johnson reiterated that depth chart is not something he is worried about.
I just want to go to the school Im going to be happy at, said Johnson. Depth chart isnt anything for me.
Maybe the biggest factor playing into his decision is his relationship with the coaching staff. He is extremely close with Sanford at Notre Dame and much of the Tennessee staff, including head coach Butch Jones. However, in recent months, Johnson has been trying to better his relationship with Irish head coach Brian Kelly.
Yeah, I think so, said Johnson when asked if that relationship has gotten strong recently. Absolutely.
Weve talked a couple of times over the phone. Last time we were on campus, we sat down and talked in his office. I feel good about our relationship at this point.
Coaches come and go all of the time in college football and Johnson noticed that during this offseason. Its something that caught him slightly by surprise, but he doesnt see that has a concern at Notre Dame or Tennessee at this point. He is trying not to let the possibility of a coaching change affect his final decision.
No, not really, said Johnson when asked if a potential coaching change is something hes concerned with at this point. Ive talked with coach Sanford for a long time now and I know he wants to be there [at Notre Dame] and Ive talked with Tennessee as well. I was a little concerned that coaches were moving [early in the recruiting process, but I guess thats how it is. Im really not concerned about Coach Kelly leaving either.
