Looks great for a sophomore film. Good running ability when he has to. I'd like to see more downfield throws and see him working through the progressions a bit more. By comparison, JG's highlights have downfield throws in spades. Looks like different systems though so it's hard to compare. I do know this, it's starting to feel like the mid-90's with all these top QB commits and talk.
Butch Jones.
I know JG is ranked lower than HJ but i think JG is the perfect fit for us. I dont think we could have hand picked a QB thats a better fit if we chose from all the QBs in the land. I personally think JG will be special here.
You make an excellent point. There is, indeed, such a thing as individual quarterbacks who enable their coaches to most fully utilize their respective playbooks. Danny Wuerffel and Tim Tebow were perfect fits, respectively, for Steve Spurrier's and Urban Meyer's offenses. And, unfortunately, both were instrumental to Florida's winning national championships. Thus far, the prototype for Butch Jones' offense, at least in terms of productivity, was Dan Lefevour at Central Michigan. Even taking into consideration the caliber of competition Lefevour played against at CMU, I don't believe that any Tennessee fan would complain if Guarantano duplicated Lefevour's career numbers.
Lefevour, CMU's quarterback from 2006-09, compiled 2948 yards rushing on 671 carries for a 4.4 ave. and 47 tds. In 2007, he had 188 carries for 1122 yds., 6.0 ypc and 19 tds. That year he also completed 355-543 passes (65.4%) for 3652 yards, 27 tds and 13 ints. Dan Lefevour Stats | College Football at Sports-Reference.com. His career passing stats were: 1171-1763 (66.4%) for 12,905 yards, 102 touchdowns and 36 interceptions. Had he put up that kind of numbers for a major college program, Lefevour would have received serious consideration for the Heisman.
A good deal of buzz has been made since Butch Jones earlier this week talked about some good recruiting news coming soon and the recruiting buzz has centered around 2017 quarterback Hunter Johnson.
As we've said since his last visit to campus for the July Orange Carpet Day, Tennessee looks to be the team to beat and Johnson has always said he wanted to have something done by the beginning of his season.
While his season begins Friday, we don't believe a decision is coming today. Instead, we've had multiple sources tell us Johnson hopes to have a final decision within the next week to two weeks.
Johnson isn't planning a ceremony, instead he will call the coaches at whatever school and that will be the end of it. Since that's the case, there's no firm date he's holding himself to. But, from talking to several people close to his recruitment we believe a decision is imminent and the Vols are the team to beat.
But, don't count out Notre Dame just yet as the Irish are continuing to make him a top priority. Also, some have suggested N.C. State is a dark horse.
