'17 TN ATH Jacoby Stevens (LSU commit)

Shoop hire may have multiple layers. Better DC, Mid state ties, and DB guy. Maybe this class was in the back of Butch and Shoop's minds. Imagine Warrior, Byrd, Gibbs, and Stevens as the backfield. Wow.

And Osborne, TK, and Micah 👀 Just filthy

the five-star junior athlete from oakland high school in murfreesboro, tenn., said he had a “great time” at tennessee on saturday, and the vols are “definitely back on my radar” and “helped themselves a lot” by making a good impression on him during their first junior day of the year.

“tennessee is a team that is going to be taken seriously for the next year — i guess you could say months now,” said stevens, who's ranked the nation’s no. 15 overall prospect and the no. 1 player from tennessee in the 247sports composite for the 2017 class.

“they’re back on my radar, and they’re just a team that i like. This visit really helped them, just like the georgia visit helped georgia last week.”

the 6-foot-1.5, 200-pound stevens — who decommitted from lsu in november — said he’s “definitely going to visit ut again,” perhaps to attend one of its upcoming spring practices, if he can fit it into his schedule.

“it’s definitely a school i’m going to be coming back to and visit often — like these other schools, i’m going to visit often,” he said. “ut kind of put themselves in that mix where i’m going to come back and study and see how the coaches coach their players, how the players respond to the coaches — stuff like that.”

he said he enjoyed talking extensively saturday with new tennessee defensive coordinator bob shoop — who also recruited stevens during his previous stints at vanderbilt and penn state — along with vols head coach butch jones and defensive backs coach willie martinez.

Stevens said was particularly pleased to receive “clarification” from tennessee’s coaches on how they plan to use him in their defense.

“it was great seeing shoop was back in town and talking to coach shoop and coach jones,” stevens said. “i talked to coach martinez. It was great, just showing me where i would be playing if i do come to tennessee.

“coach shoop, he was at penn state, and he had a player, (adrian) amos, he said he wants me kind of in that position where i can play the safety, i can play nickel and play dime, and come off the edge rushing — just stuff like that. That’s the position he said he envisions me playing for ut.

“this time i got more clarification. The past times i was here, of course i went to the game and the coaches were busy. But with ut, i wasn’t clear at first on what they wanted me at. But now i took it upon myself to ask questions and take the process more serious, and i got my questions answered, and now i’m more clear on where they want me.”

stevens, who hadn’t been to tennessee since attending its home game against alabama in october 2014, said he talked more extensively with jones than he had during any of his previous visits with the vols.

“i don’t want to say that coach jones hasn’t been talking with me, because he has. He’s been trying his hardest,” stevens said. “but when i did come, it was game day. I understand, hey, it’s game day. He’s focused on the game. But today we had great conversations.

“we shot the breeze by just talking about the campus, how they’re rebuilding. We talked about where he wants me to play — same thing everybody preaches, same thing. We talked about basketball. We talked about (lsu’s) ben simmons tonight playing (basketball) against ut. It was just a nice experience talking to coach jones.”

with plenty of teams now aggressively pursuing him following his decommitment from lsu, he said “everybody’s the same” among the more than 20 schools pursuing him.

But he said he’s giving strong consideration to tennessee, and he has been impressed by the direction of the vols’ program under jones.

“they’re building. They're going up and up,” stevens said. “the record shows how coach jones is using his talent wisely and how he’s taking the ut program back to the top. It’s definitely a program that people are going to have to watch for in a couple years.”

Not going to lie if we could use the practice facility of hs scrimmages I would take advantage of that like crazy. What a recruiting tool. Get teams from middle tn. Ensworth, Oakland, all those other schools producing big talent. Let them come and play catholic or maryville.

I know some high schools around here practice there during playoffs.

Solid visit, but can't get excited till the coaches are "just talking about life."

Then, you know, it's for real

Hahaha...I read the article and thought...oh so they are still talking football. They haven't reached the 'just hanging out talking about life' stage yet.

But per volatil great progress been made just to get him interested.

“One, how Coach (Bob) Shoop is already coming in and already has respect for his players, especially on defense but both sides, and coaches under him have respect for him already,” Stevens said of the Vols’ new defensive coordinator. “And another thing that stands out is the players, how they’re one team. At the visit they’re around just talking and laughing with each other. Great environment.

“I got to spend a lot of time with Coach Shoop, Coach (Butch) Jones, Coach (Willie) Martinez; we talked a lot of football, campus life. Enjoyed the basketball game. We talked about Coach Martinez playing at Miami for his college ball, talked about little things like that.”

While those conversations were easy, Stevens said the most reassuring talk came when he discussed what position he would play in Tennessee’s defense if the Vols eventually secure his commitment.

“It wasn’t me seeing anything. It was me more hearing,” Stevens explained. “I wanted to get clarification of where they’d play me and what role I’d take on Tennessee’s defense. Coach Shoop, Coach Martinez said I’d be in the secondary at the nickel and the dime. Those are the things I wanted to hear.

“The majority of schools say the same thing. With UT, I wasn’t sure where I’d be playing just because when I did go up there, I was young and they were focused on the two classes above me so I didn’t get a chance then to really find that out.”

With his most pressing question answered, Stevens said he exited Rocky Top late Saturday night with a new view of Tennessee.

“UT helped itself a lot because like I said, they clarified where I’d b playing for them,” Stevens said. “That was a big one for me and my family, where I would be playing if I go there and UT where they stand with me, right now like every other school, I’m just kind of laying back and watching everybody and just taking it all in.

“UT made a great impression on me. That’s one of the reasons why I did de-commit from LSU because things like this, I can go out and explore other schools and what they have to offer me.”

Stevens said he would try to get back to Knoxville again in the coming months and also said he knows he’ll be hearing from former Oakland teammate Jack Jones until that time.

“I talked to Jack a lot and he’s loving it up there,” Stevens said. “You can tell that he’s enjoying his experience playing at UT. That’s his dream school. Of course he’s going to have fun, but he’s 100-percent behind Coach Butch.

“Every time I see Jack when he comes back, he mentions it. He stays on me about going to UT.”

So when he says they want him to play some Safety, Nickel, Dime, and rush of the edge at times, are they talking about the Star?

If he could put on 20 lbs, that'd make him about 6'2" 220, right? Sounds like the perfect size for the Star.

If I am not mistaken, Star in Shoop's scheme is an olb who slides out on the slot in obvious passing situations.

Yup, to me.

The Star is a hybrid. A cross between a SS & OLB.

Has to be able to play in the box, but also be able to run and cover.

Didn't know if that's what they were telling Stevens he would play at Tennessee.

I feel like either he or Gibbs will end up there for us. Will be interesting to see what happens if we get both on board.

Except in the past, Shoop's Star has been more of a hybrid safety/olb. JRM might end up being the guy there, but we might also keep playing a different guy there too in addition to JRM and Kirkland. If JRM does play star, then he'll have to slide to another position when we go into the nickel because Shoop's star doesn't play in the nickel. It's not just a WLB like you've implied in the past.

If you look at his defenses at Vandy and PSU, he's played guys who seem more like big safeties there as well as guys who are basically just OLBs. We're not really sure who he'll pick here.

I wouldn't worry about Gibbs spot being taken at all. He could play safety, corner, or WR. If he is smart he will want to play corner because NFL teams shell out big $$$$ for good corners on a regular basis.
