'17' TN ATH Tee Higgins (Clemson commit)

I don't think that's a violation unless he's somehow getting money out of it. If it is a violation, it goes to show how dumb the NCAA rules are. What's wrong with wanting to see your jersey in the stands?

Promoting the sell of any product is a violation. It doesn't matter who gets the money

247 and their composite is soooo lame. Why would you defer to something outside of your own rankings?

They really liked our class last year. Had us 11th. Nobody ever talks about that.

I agree their composite sucks.

However, Our class was rated high on their own rankings because of the amount of guys we took compared to almost everyone else. Unlike Rivals, who only counts the top 20 signees, 247 counts every single signee so you are rewarded for quantity.

All jobs have to be approved but being a spokesman for any product isn't allowed.

It's all in the NCAA manual. Enjoy reading it lol

I don't think that wording is in the rule book, which is why I'm asking. I see rules about promotion, but not worded like that.

Meh, lots of teams had 25+ and it's not as if we are getting a ton of points for the 2* guys at the bottom.

They liked our class.

You aren't allowed to use your status as an amateur athlete to promote a product regardless of you making money or not.

If this is real, the NCAA won't allow him to play this year as a best case scenario.

you know that's what the smaller number under the 16 and 17 were.

Do you have a link to the rule?

Not a link, but some quotes I found in a NCAA compliance pamphlet.

"Student-athletes MAY NOT allow their name, picture or personal appearance to advertise, recommend or promote the sale or use of any commercial products, services or businesses"
"The student-athlete may not receive payment for their appearance at a promotional activity"

Thank you. Now I found the rule in full context. I don't think that Tee has violated the spirit of the rule. If we're going to apply letter of the law, everybody who says to a friend "I like McDonald's" is in violation. I highly doubt Tee gets more than a slap on the wrist for this.

Promotional Activities

Each year the athletics department receives many
requests from the community for our student athletes
to make public appearances or autographed
memorabilia. It is permissible for student-athletes to
participate in promotional activities, provided certain
criteria are met.

  • Student-athletes MAY NOT allow their name,
picture or personal appearance to advertise,
recommend or promote the sale or use of any
commercial products, services or businesses.
  • Student-athletes must receive written approval
from the Compliance Office PRIOR to participating
in any promotional activities.
  • The student-athlete may not miss class.
  • The student-athlete may not receive payment for
their appearance at a promotional activity.

In order to protect a student-athlete’s eligibility, it is
important to check with the Compliance Office before
the student-athlete participates in any promotional
activity with an outside organization. It is a violation for
any student-athlete to make an appearance without
obtaining written permission from the Athletics Director
PRIOR to the appearance.
