'17 TN OL/DT Trey Smith (UT commit 12/6/2016)

All this discussion about life champions and losers is nothing but a diversion from an incompetent coaching staff. Notice that Vol fans talk about the good ole days, because that is really all we have now.

I have quite a lot more than that.

I think one of the perverse things about some fans is that they only view the team in terms of winning and losing. I want a team I can be proud of. Period. Winning is part of that, but so is effort, so is character, so is sportsmanship, so is graduation rate, so are arrest records, so is community pride. I'm not happy with the win loss record, but if you think all there is to being proud of the program, you are pretty shallow.

That's why we're hearing names like Art Briles pop up as a replacement.

We've all been fans. Some longer than others. Quit telling us what's garbage and what's not...we've seen enough to know the difference.

Post Fulmer made everyone so soft and completely complacent. Talk about pride? What a joke

You don't like it?

So - y'all realize that developing a team of good character (champions of life) and winning at a high level are not mutually exclusive? Just like wining traditions. They all can and should coexist easily with each other.

Having the right leadership is the key issue to achieving it. Hence, the problem to be solved.

Not sure how easy it is. Bama wins easily but have several problems with guys like Lacy who do not seem to pass the graduate test and Cam Rob and others getting in trouble but always getting out of it makes it not look so bad. Others schools have great APR's ect but don't win as easily. Hard to find great athletes who will excel in the college classroom and off the field as well. So it is not easy to have both because not many Josh Dobbs out there.

Yea, I heard a guy on the radio the other day, a national guy and can't recall who, but he said when a coach gets a high profile job he's got to decide right away whether he's going to win or do it the right way. This was in regards to skirting the rules. It's very hard to win at a high level today without crossing a line. It's very corrupt and some programs are under more scrutiny than others thus the risk is higher when you do venture across that line.

CBJ is proud of the men his players have become. Would you rather they be life losers. I'll sign my kids up for Life Championships all day. Y'all need to let go of that sound byte.

Agree. It was bad timing but not a bad statement. Overplayed at this point considering the young men representing our program.

Yeah, I really miss those good ole days when Kiffin or Dooley was our coach here.

You sound like a Vandy fan talking about academics bro

Really. I think it's a good thing that our players do well in school so I'm a Vandy fan. Your gonna pull a muscle with all that reaching you're doing. Would you rather we have a mediocre graduation rate and build a prison to hold all our former players that end up as criminals after they leave UT. There is nothing wrong with being proud of our upstanding young men that are also football players. They also deserve our support and the best coaching staff that we can provide. So the AD needs to be in place and they need to start making phone calls so next year we don't have to settle for moral victories. UT deserves winners in life and on the field.

But soundbites without context, or depth, are much easier for simple people to understand. They don't want truth because it's complex and often boring. Soundbites and contrived dramatic reality TV is much more exciting. Especially if it furthers the agenda of getting the boring cliche-coach sent packing. Entertain me, damnit, that's what I came for!

Butch doesn't get paid $4 million a year to produce life championships. ESPN and CBS do not televise kids winning life championships. I think it's great and desirable to have good kids on the team but the coaching staff is paid well to produce wins.
