Barton Simmons, 247Sports’ director of scouting, said the addition of Smith, a senior from University School of Jackson (Tenn.), “is a huge momentum-shifter for Tennessee” as a major in-state splash at a position of need, and he’s a player the Vols “absolutely had to have.”

“I think, as much as anything, this is a huge momentum-shifter for Tennessee because this is the best player in the state in a year where there’s been a lot of really good players, and some of them getting to other programs,” Simmons said of Smith, who’s ranked by 247Sports as the nation’s No. 4 overall prospect and the No. 1 player from the state of Tennessee.

“This is one that Tennessee absolutely had to have, and particularly at the crucial offensive-line position. This is just a critical commitment for Tennessee and is the type of commitment that I think can really leave a big mark on the recruiting class and the 2017 cycle in general.”

“I think that’s probably the biggest positive for Trey, is that he is a mature kid,” Simmons said. “He’s a focused kid, very self-motivated, comes from a really good family. He’s going to do all the things right, on and off the field, to prepare himself to be successful.

“And particularly at a position like offensive line, where it is so much about the little things and work ethic as much as anything else, I think that’s probably the single most important characteristic that Trey is going to carry with him to college, is just that he is a guy that you expect is going to find a way to be successful.”

Trey Smith is a big get for the Vols...

Tennessee has put lots of hours into his recruitment through the years and obviously today his commitment is a big statement for the program.

Butch Jones and his entire staff deserve a ton of credit for their work to land Smith.

Don't sell short the work of current Vols from offensive linemen Jack Jones and others in that room to Jarett G, other players in the program and future Vol Cade Mays. They have been huge in making Trey comfortable with Tennessee not just being the school he chooses but his home for the next few years.

This certainly gives the Vols some momentum ending into Sunday's dead period and they might not be done with commitments over the next week or so.

But today, it's about Trey Smith.

If you heard his speech you understand how great of a kid he is. If you saw the crowd at the announcement you understand how big of a deal he is not just as a player but as a person.

Was very well spoken! I'd like to comment on the "LIFE" thing he mentioned. Apparently, these 18 yo kids are much more intelligent than many of our fans. There is more to life, than just football. Wish all you dbags would learn from his comments and get off the "champions of life" bs you've been spewing for 2 weeks!! Not everyone, but y'all know who you are!!
