'17 TN OL/DT Trey Smith (UT commit 12/6/2016)

This thread, like so many others on VN, suffers from the long term disease known as " the back up is better than the starter syndrome". No way Jones should displace Thomas unless Thomas is hurt again. That's not a knock on Jones, as he's a really good player. But he isn't as good a Center as a healed up Thomas.
We don't know that though because we've never seen Jones play center.

We have seen Thomas have his fair share of struggles at times every single season he's been here at every single position he's played though.

I'm not saying replace Thomas with Jones. I'm saying IF one of our guys like Robertson or Jones (one of those guys will likely be the backup at center next year) manages to outwork and earn the starting spot at center from Thomas, that's a good look for us. It would allow someone like Boulware or Smith a shot to contribute at OG also.

You've gotta find a way to get your best 5 on the field. Thomas is most likely our best center. But I'm not sure he's one of our best 5 OL.

Edit: and I get that center isn't a spot you just throw someone into because they block well. Snap security is of the utmost importance especially since we'll have a new QB next year who likely won't have Dobbs' penchant for turning busted plays into positive ones.

So likely our best, safest bet is to keep Thomas there.

But if a higher upside guy shows he can snap just as well, that's a great look for us. All I'm saying.

I think it is very obvious that at the beginning of the season, CT was either significantly injured, or he didn't work hard in the off season..or both. He is better than he showed the first few weeks.

Maybe. He's had problems getting straight bulldozed at times since he set foot on campus though. Not just when he was injured, either.

Like I said, he probably is our best center. Probably not one of our top 5 OL or top 3 interior guys overall though.

I read somewhere that his ankles were purple in the early season. Some wondered how he played at all.

I'm wondering if we're going after that one true center from Florida and let him redshirt next year

Cracks me up, people trying to replace Coleman at C. He will play C in the NFL and our fans are suggesting replacing him with somebody that is not even a C.

My Fav 5 best chance to win
Richmond-Boulware-Roberson-Jones-Hall

Backup
Kendrick-Thomas

Thomas is not strong enough to sustain blocks. Boulware I believe is going to be a beast! Watch the tape on him when he in the game he's great in pass pro and very solid on run downs.

Why didn't Alabama?

I agreed but it was rare. Cam was a rare one and Bama usually gets all the rare everything with the 60K car line they have going. Jonah Williams is a good one too but those are their two exceptions. Right now they have a combined 16 seasons of experience coming into this year with their five starters. You take out Williams and it is 15 years of experience with the other four. That is an average of almost four years. Here is their two deep as of right now.

LT 74 Robinson, Cam JR/2 77 Womack, Matt RS FR
LG 71 Pierschbacher, Ross RS SO/1 59 Warmack, Dallas SO/1
OC 75 Bozeman, Bradley RS JR/2 63 Hassenauer, J.C. JR/2
RG 78 Kirven, Korren RS SR/3 67 Casher, Josh RS SO
RT 73 Williams, Jonah FR 66 Cotton, Lester SO/1

Heard the same thing. I thought he actually played well at the end of the year. His athleticism when he gets to the 2nd level of the defense is quite good.

In Farrell's defense he's not the first to say this about Smith...he seems to be similar to Hall in this way...a lot of people thought Hall would be a guard and he still might be...I could see Smith at guard or right tackle depending on what the best combination of 5 is at that time

For whom and for how long did Farrell coach??

Good info and points. But, generally Saban will play the best players regardless of their class. Several FR have started in recent years -- Kuanjio, Robinson, Williams are examples, and Leatherwood may start in 2017.

#49 in the new rivals 100...this makes him a 6.0 four star and will result in a big point increase in their scoring system...really good job by Butch and staff to land this consensus top 50, in state player that grew up a Bama fan

#1 player overall by ESPN but #49 by Rivals? What a huge difference & mess. Proves these recruiting services are not very reliable doesn't it.
