We don't know that though because we've never seen Jones play center. This thread, like so many others on VN, suffers from the long term disease known as " the back up is better than the starter syndrome". No way Jones should displace Thomas unless Thomas is hurt again. That's not a knock on Jones, as he's a really good player. But he isn't as good a Center as a healed up Thomas.
We have seen Thomas have his fair share of struggles at times every single season he's been here at every single position he's played though.
I'm not saying replace Thomas with Jones. I'm saying IF one of our guys like Robertson or Jones (one of those guys will likely be the backup at center next year) manages to outwork and earn the starting spot at center from Thomas, that's a good look for us. It would allow someone like Boulware or Smith a shot to contribute at OG also.
You've gotta find a way to get your best 5 on the field. Thomas is most likely our best center. But I'm not sure he's one of our best 5 OL.
Edit: and I get that center isn't a spot you just throw someone into because they block well. Snap security is of the utmost importance especially since we'll have a new QB next year who likely won't have Dobbs' penchant for turning busted plays into positive ones.
So likely our best, safest bet is to keep Thomas there.
But if a higher upside guy shows he can snap just as well, that's a great look for us. All I'm saying.
