'17 TN OL/DT Trey Smith (UT commit 12/6/2016)

Good to know!!! I always thought he would be a great offensive in fielder my self but I'm not a coach or talent evaluator, so what do I know.

FYI, I wasn't trying to be a smart butt...was trying stay in line with the theme of "M R ducks".

Underclassman Eval

STRENGTHS: Tall kid with great length and balance. Fluid athlete with an explosive first step who takes good angles and has the athleticism to make blocks in space and in the second level. Violent at the point of attack and seems to relish punishing opponents. Flashes very good technique in pass pro.

AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT: Needs to continue to fill out his frame and further improve functional strength. Like many young linemen needs to be more consistent with pad level.

BOTTOM LINE: Smith has the size and athleticism to play left tackle at the next level. We also really like his aggressive attitude and desire to finish every play. He will need to add some size, but he has tons of upside.

So does anyone have any insight on whether or not the Drae Bowles situation has a negative effect here?? JCS and USJ are two schools that are as closely connected as any two could be.. Not a great look in that community..

Yeah but we both know that this crap is recent and these kids never saw #27 take a snap at UT.. Also AL went to Jackson Central Merry which is basicallt like a different town from these two schools even though all in Jackson.. I hope I am wrong but I have a feeling this is a major detriment to Trey's recruitment.. I was hoping someone was in the know here.. Really want this kid.. I have watched home three times in person last year and from my untrained eye he is a big time talent.. TIFWIW

Trey Smith is now the #11 ranked overall recruit & the #5 ranked OT in the nation according to 247Sports. Smith jumped 16 spots in the rankings from the initial rankings to this newest update. Smith is currently still rated a 4* recruit, but is essentially guaranteed to end up a 5* recruit barring a major injury/terrible season. 247Sports rated 32 prospects as 5* recruits in the 2016 class, so Smith will be a sure-fire 5* recruit soon with his #11 overall national ranking.

Trey Smith, OT, Jackson (Tenn.) University School – He's the top offensive tackle on the board of some of the top programs in the nation.

The possibility of landing Smith, Gibbs, Stevens, Chandler, Richardson and Higgins, yes I still think we get him. That is scary good right there.

Damn. That makes it 3 5* recruits in the state of Tennessee.

Hold on a minute I've been around Jackson since USJ was Old Hickory Academy and then many years later JCS came along under the direction of the Church of Christ and those two schools are not at all closely connected except for being private.

That's what I was thinking

I understand what you are saying about the separate "affiliations" and being comprised of different types of people.. However reality is Jackson is not exactly a metropolis.. To add to that these schools are both on the north side of town and actually only separated by a few miles.. To think that people associated with both schools do not have significant social interaction is a bit naive.. I guess that was my point.. No disrespect.. As I said before I hope this does not cause problems because this kid is a big time talent.. I have no personal knowledge of the situation and do not reside in that community so you may very well have a better grasp on the overall dynamic.. Just a thought

All the private schools here are located very close to each other. But the situation with Drae will not affect recruitment of any athlete. Fact is many students go to Knoxville every year from here. Most have a great experience there. The Bowles situation is considered an outlier, not the norm.

Yeah I hope that's the case.. I noticed that Trey is apparently visiting for Junior day upcoming maybe this weekend.. That is a pretty clear indication that there is no issue.. I was just curious when I asked

IMO the Bowles situation isn't an outlier, it happens to around 25% of UT football recruits. They arrive with great promise but don't progress as expected and never really contribute to the program. A good number of them transfer out for a fresh start at another (typically lesser) program. Bowles didn't do much at UTC this season either. Appears his talents were way over estimated coming out of HS. Not a knock on his character, he simply isn't a D1 football player. It's an inexact science and if the coaches could get it right every time then they would only need 50-60 scholarships.

I think he is referencing the situation with Bowles off the field...
