'17 TN OL/DT Trey Smith (UT commit 12/6/2016)

Trey Smith is now the #11 ranked overall recruit & the #5 ranked OT in the nation according to 247Sports. Smith jumped 16 spots in the rankings from the initial rankings to this newest update. Smith is currently still rated a 4* recruit, but is essentially guaranteed to end up a 5* recruit barring a major injury/terrible season. 247Sports rated 32 prospects as 5* recruits in the 2016 class, so Smith will be a sure-fire 5* recruit soon with his #11 overall national ranking.

-247Sports.

Doesn't look like Rivals thinks that highly of him...they dropped him completely out of the 250...he is now rated lower than Eze...that doesn't seem right at all to me

Not sure what to make of all this. What I would tell these kids is that these ranking mean jack ****. An offer is an offer. There are no gold packages or bronze packages.

The only ranking that will matter is draft day rankings. They are for dollars.

High school ranking are for subscribers

Nobody, least of all Trey Smith, should be too worried about how Rivals, or anybody else, rates a player. Smith is, according to his HS coaches Very talented, raw, intelligent, and coachable.
Remember that Tee Higgins was a five star WR when first rated by Rivals.....he committed to TN......Rivals dropped him to a four star.....he then decoms from us......and the Michigans, Alabamas, So Cals, and Clemsons begin a fierce recruiting campaign for him, and then....suddenly....Higgins is a five star again. Recruiting politics anyone?
That's happening with Smith now too, that's all. He is still a prize not to be lost....a Must Get, for many reasons. I hope his sister, a UT alum, has influence with him.

The fact of the matter is that they do care. It gets them attention, not just from fans, but from coaches. Of course, all staffs should perform their own evaluations and not rely on the recruiting services, but the ratings also get them trips to The Opening, the under armor and army all-american games and likely quite a bit of other free stuff as well. I am sure that there are politics involved, but if you think Hubbs is not lobbying for players that Tennessee is interested in to be ranked higher, then, well, that's just how it goes.

Says a lot about the credibility of the recruiting rating services. Would never give those propaganda machines a penny of my money.

I think that Smith is very high on us and right now I feel like he'll go the distance with UT. So if he wants to play the game and get the 5 star status I completely understand. You only get recruited once and he should live it up, go on all his visits, make friends and (hopefully) do some recruiting for us.

According to Brent Hubbs and John Brice, speaking recently and separately; we are in good shape with TS. True, he grew up a Alabama fan, and Tuscaloosa is a lot closer to Jackson than Ktown; but he seems solid to UT for now.

It's a half an hour difference. Definitely not "a lot closer"
