'17 TN OL K'Rojhn Calbert (UT signee)

With the injuries already, is it wise to sign developmental players with knee problems?
Nothing against the kid, I'm happy for him, but I don't think this is a good sign of where UT is with Smith and where they are overall in their recruiting.

Potential is just what we want at this point. We have 3 talented recruits from the 2016 class that are developing nicely. Tatum has even played quite a few snaps because of the injuries. I still believe we will sign 4 OL and Smith will be one of those. Smith could contribute right away, but the others have the time to develop, which is the way it should be.

All indications are we are just fine with Smith. We need as many bodies as we can get. Except for rare cases, most oline recruits are "developmental". Drew Richmond was a 5*, but he needed a redshirt year plus some. He looked better last week, but most players need at least 2 years in the program learning and getting stronger. On the other hand, you have guys like Chance Hall who come in and are able to contribute. We have had to play so many a lot earlier than is normally desired. Hopefully we can build up our depth, eventually, to be able to redshirt these kids. It sucked having to burn Tatum's redshirt this year.

He can still get a redshirt year before he graduates. It's been done before. Just depends on who we sign behind him and how fast they develop.

I hope he has a big ol' mean streak in his 6'6" frame playing OL.

Just looking at his pic he seems to be too nice of a guy.

barton simmons, 247sports' director of scouting, said "there aren't many more talented" than the 6-foot-5, 290-pound calbert, and while he's not likely to make an early impact for the vols, he has a chance to "be an nfl tackle" with "first-round upside."

"i love this pickup for tennessee," simmons said of calbert, who's ranked the nation's no. 577 overall prospect and no. 61 offensive tackle in the 247sports composite for the 2017 class.

"he's not an instant-impact guy. There's going to be a significant adjustment period for him because he just hasn't played a lot of football, and there's a lot he has to learn. When that assimilation period is over in a couple of years, though, calbert has the potential to be an nfl tackle. I'm talking first-round upside."

"when i watched him at michigan's satellite camp over the summer, calbert was running through agility drills and keeping up with skill players at 6-6, 285 pounds," simmons said, referring to the wolverines' satellite camp june 14 at oakland high school in murfreesboro, tenn.

"he was in a totally different league than offensive and defensive linemen athletically."

"the pressure is going to be on tennessee's coaches to develop him because, in terms of hunks of clay, there aren't many more talented in the country," simmons said.

“life after football was the difference,” said calbert, who’s ranked the nation’s no. 577 overall prospect and no. 61 offensive tackle in the 247sports composite for the 2017 class. “i wanted to be close to home. At times, it wasn’t a factor. At times, it was a factor. “but staying in-state is life after home. If you succeed, they’re going to love you. If you don’t succeed, you can still say, ‘i was a part of that — vfl.’ and i think people still take pride in that, so that’s what made the difference.”

“honestly, it was really tough,” calbert said. “staying in-state, it’s just important. You want to be able to build and maybe influence other great athletes that are in tennessee to be able to come be a part of the big orange. People take pride in that, and i feel like it’s a pride thing. Life after football, you have a lot of opportunity, and i really think that they care about you and care for you in more than football at times.

“it was really close. South carolina, i think highly of them and think highly of coach (will) muschamp, (offensive line) coach (shawn) elliott, (running backs) coach bobby bentley. They’ve got a really good group of guys up that way. It was either them or south carolina. It hurts, but then again, it’s a pride thing, and tennessee is where i need to be.”

“a lot of people assumed that i would jump on the ut offer as soon as i got it, just because it meant a lot to me. But that wasn’t the case,” he said. “i was wondering about pulling the trigger that night, but i was like, ‘well, don’t make decisions when you’re really happy, and don’t make decisions when you’re really sad.’ that’s what i took into consideration, and that’s what i did. I believe i needed to see maybe just a little bit more to make sure i was 100 percent on it, and i did and i made my decision.”

“i probably won’t take any more officials. I think right now i’m married to one girl.”
