'17 TN OL K'Rojhn Calbert (UT signee)

this young man's film reminded me of Jack Jones film. he seems like a mauler. I just saw a little bit of his film but I was impressed.

If he has first round potential then why is he a 3 star? Isn't that what they rate guys on is potential? Not complaining about his rating just curious.

He didn't play his Sophomore and Junior years I believe is the reason. Flew under the radar because of it. He was injured.

No, five star usually means they think they can come in and compete for a starting spot right away. They are college ready right now. If a guy isn't college ready they usually won't rate him that high.

While I'm not disagreeing with you, but if you go by 247 ratings he should be a 5 star

lol I'm in no way trying to start and argument with anyone on here, all I am saying is if Simmons wants to throw out "1st round potential" he should be ranked accordingly.

Completely agree. If you're going to throw out things like 1st round potential for an OL, then you are saying he is like a Cam Robinson type player. And thats just not the case here. If the guy is thst good, then he should be a 5* right now. I mean its November.

My understanding is that 5 stars are immediate impact players. First round potential can be developed.

Do we have the expertise and coaching to develop this guy? Serious question.

IMO we do.

Mahoney has done well with our line from a development standpoint. Kerbyson, Kendrick, Thomas, Wiesman. These guys all improved on his watch, some dramatically.

My entire beef with Mahoney is that he plays some weird lineups at times. Jack Jones was clearly one of our best linemen to start the year, yet Mahoney leaves him on the bench in favor of a center who was immobilized by ankle injuries. And this isn't the first time that he has, from my perspective, failed to get our best five on the field.

But some of the complaints about Mahoney are outdated IMO.

Because it is his personal opinion. He has to sell everyone else on rankings board the same. Everyone else will say I need to see the film which he didn't have until this year because he was a basketball player then was hurt last two years. JC Shurburtt wrote an article on his blog site saying its a huge pickup as well.

I think the star rating has more to do with projecting a player to be able to come in and contribute at the college level at a high level than their long term potential.

There are plenty of guys who come out every year who look like they have the potential to one day be a first round pick at some position or another.

There aren't a whole lot who come out, start as a freshman, and play at a high level right away. Sometimes those 5* guys who come out of the gate so fast hit a plateau and end up as mid-round prospects while they guys who had higher upside but were less ready to contribute at the college level coming right out of high school pass them up around their 2nd-4th years in the program.
