Large majority were 3 *s?
I'm not trying to troll you, Nationdom. Like I said though, it gets old, Bubba. What is it about the process that you hate so much. I'd much rather see a bunch of good ole boys get coached up and win 10 or 11 games every year than watch teams full of 4 and 5 star talent blow it every year (Buckeyes, Dawgs, Tigers of the LA and SC persuasion, TA&M, FSU, USC, Oregon, OU). They all choke at some point. So have we. So what makes them different than us? Please learn to enjoy the process, man. For your sanity and ours.
The entire starting OL, starting TE, starting HB, the entire starting secondary (except McNeil), our leading WR (Smith), large portions of our DL rotation, specifically our DTs who played the most snaps (Vereen, Lewis, Vickers and Owen), special teams was unbelievable and was comprised of basically nothing but 3*s (excluding our KR, who was a VERY low 4* whose last night happens to be Berry). Yes, large majority. As a matter of fast the only units that didn't subsist almost entirely on 3* recruits were the LBs and the offensive backfield. Now those units did work, but even the LBs were not so highly rated. JRM was a low 4*, Kirkland was a freshman who was getting beat out by a walk-on at the beginning of the season.
Coaching works. The proof is in the pudding.
EDIT: Don't forget our walk-on punter who ended up being the GOAT.
I'd love to see some good ole boys do it as well but it can't be done. Give me one example. We had a small group of 3* starters last year and we went 9-4. Should have been 11-1, but anyways this year we will only have 4-5 3*s starting and we should win the natty.
Who do you think our starting HB was, Hurd and Kamara were both 5 stars, now if you meant QB then yes Dobbs was a 3 star on most services and the only reason Jumper beat out Kirkland to begin the season was that Kirkland just hadn't gotten our system down yet, same with Justin Martin.
That's not a small group of 3*s, man. Realistically, 14 of our 22 starters on offense or defense were 3*s and we went 9-4. We did well. Those are good ole boys. You are right we should have been 11-1 with roughly 64% of our starters being ranked at an unacceptable level according to your arbitrary scale of prepared for CFB. Also, Michigan State and Mizzou have historically been perfect examples of teams that do more nationally with less perceived talent. Others include North Carolina, Stanford, TCU, Utah, Iowa, Wisconsin, Nebraska, the list goes on.

Ellis was our starting H-back, a former walk on.
Hurd and Kamara are RB. We use an HB here also.
Thought Dobbs was a middle of the road 4*.
Did Kirkland and Martin get beat out for starting jobs at any point? If they did, the numbers stand. Martin was a 3* out of HS, by the way.

Those teams are all garbage and have never one a natty with your formula. We had 5-6 *s max last year starting. Kicker and punter do not count.
We were having a good conversation. Then you got butthurt. You asked for teams that do more with less. Just because you don't like the answer doesn't mean the answer isn't true. You are using another arbitrary standard of measure. All of those teams have done great things with not much talent according to the evaluators. You can disagree, that's fine, but I have given you facts. Rejecting facts makes you irrational.
