'17 TX QB Will McBride (UT Commit 12/13/2016)

I am glad that the negavols are out in force. I hope that someone in his family or even McBride reads all of these negative posts. I want him to have a chip on his shoulder and to work even harder to prove all of you knee-jerkers wrong. Every player is not going to contribute. Many we think will, do not. Often, those that we think will not contribute, do just that.

I really don't understand why BOT, vols30, and their ilk don't just start rooting for Bama. That's literally the ONLY team in America that can live up to their unrealistic standards.

They should all just put "3 stars suck and Butch isn't meeting expectations" as their signature.

Then they could quit trying to find different ways to say it in every single post.

You guys want to compete with the big dogs? It helps to recruit the same players they are recruiting.
I guess the standard apologist is ok with Purdue being his best offer

As long as you understand that it doesn't matter that you're not.

This is the attitude I'm referring to when talking about our program has made the fans lower the bar. Esrly 2000s and in the 90s nobody would have been content with where we are now in recruiting or in results. We sound like Vanderbilt fans.

1990 – 9-2 (SEC Champs)
1991 – 9-3
1992 – 9-3
1993 – 10-2
1994 – 8-4
1995 – 11-1
1996 – 10 -2
1997 – 11-2 (SEC Champs)
1998 – 13-0 (SEC/National Champs)
1999 – 9-3
2000 – 8-4
2001 – 11-2 (SEC East Champs)
2002 – 8-5
2003 – 10-3 (SEC East Co-Champs)
2004 – 10-3 (SEC East Champs)
2005 – 5-6
2006 – 9-4
2007 – 10-4 (SEC East Champs)
2008 – 5-7
2009 – 7-6
2010 – 6-7
2011 – 5-7
2012 – 5-7
2013 – 5-7
2014 – 7-6
2015 – 9-4
2016 – 8-4 (Pending Bowl Game)

Double Digit Win Seasons – 9/27 = 1/3 or .333
SEC East Champs or Better – 7/27 = approx. ¼ or .259

Most of us have the highest of expectations every year. If you hang out in the RF you will see that the closer we get to the season the higher our expectations become. However, over the last nearly three decades we have not been the juggernaut that many make us out to be. Even in seasons where we have had double digit wins we haven’t necessarily won the East. I will continue to have the highest of expectations but I will also understand that we are in a down cycle and it is not as easy to get recruits when you are pulling double digit win seasons and vying for championships. Part of this falls on Butch but a lot of it falls on his predecessors for failing to recruit or just robbing the cupboard on the way out of town.

As far as young Mr. McBride goes, I think his height has prevented a lot of teams from pulling the trigger on an offer. Watching his film, he can make every throw on the field. He hits his receivers in stride, he throws them open, he anticipates where he knows the receiver will be and throws before they get there. He is elusive and difficult to bring down, ala Dobbs. I think he has an opportunity to come in, red shirt and then compete for a spot on this team. 2013 and 2014 should have shown us that the entire QB depth chart better be ready to go in at any time because you never know when the injury bug is going to hit. This kid is going to be a Vol so either get behind him and root for his success or get the heck out of the way and go jump on a bandwagon somewhere.

GBMFO!

No. But I don't have to say it in every single one of my posts.

Broken record.

Kid kind of reminds me Johnny Manziel

Yeah..not wanting to go there, but I noticed he does do something that really reminds me of JM. When he takes off, he nearly always is looking downfield to throw. He does that over and over in his film. That is one of the worst things about Dobbs. He almost never does this, and when he does it usually isn't a good throw. McBride makes some really beautiful touch passes while escaping from pressure. That is an innate instinct that can not be taught.

My only "complaint" is a lot of people say "Stars be damned, they don't mean anything once he steps foot on campus. He just needs time to grow and get coached up." That is 100% true, and I have no doubts about that. There obviously are a lot of 3* QB's that turn out unreal.

BUT, my one worry is do I really trust Butch to "coach'em up"? He hasn't exactly made me feel like he is a prodigy in that department. I don't want to sit here and disect the whole roster, but there are plenty of examples of players who showed a lot of promise when recruited who have either stagnated and not gotten better, or in some cases regressed and played terrible (Justin Martin).

People seem to think that the ratings are a measure. They aren't. We've all seen players who ended up way above or below expectations based on ratings. On an individual player basis, they are at best mediocre predictors. For every Peyton who lived up to expectations there is a Bryce Brown who failed to do so. A given three star might be great in the right circumstance. A given 5 star might crash and burn. And while I'd take a team of five stars over a team of three stars, I'd take the latter playing as a team over the former playing as prima donnas. There is just more to success than the inaccurate ratings.

Rarely do players from Texas 6A fail to receive enough exposure to be accurately rated. Being 6' (and height is often exaggerated) hurts him. But his rating is very unlikely to be because the recruiting sites do not have enough info.

Ceiling for him is probably a Chase Daniel type player.

Wasn't Johnny Manziel a 3*qb from Tx who won a Heisman?
Just saying...

These arguments are just ways of trying to prove to yourself its a good pickup. I hate when people try to pick out a non ranked player from 10 years ago to compare to a commitment. Can it happen? Sure. Will it happen? Not likely. The averages are against this kid ever being more than what he is, a security blanket for when Dormandy transfers after losing out to JG.

We needed a QB. Kid sounds like a hard worker that is willing to develop over time vs transfer at first sniff at backup role. Chad Morris and Mike Norvell are two of the best QB coaches in country. They know more than we do. There is obviously something they all liked about him. Solid player. Not elite but we weren't getting an elite guy anyway.

I liked Bubba but he wouldn't promise enrollment over MLB draft

There are 3* players that turn out to be better than their ranking. That's why it's hard to downplay any particular recruit.

The problem is that when the class is made up predominantly of 3*'s, most will end up being just that and our record will usually reflect it, ending up in the 7 to 9 win range most years.
And for every 3* that turns out better you'll have abt. the same number being worse.

And I share the same concern, Butch isn't developing most of these players and elevating their play.
