'17 VA DE Ryan Thaxton (UT signee)

Getting to know Thaxton:

Pregame routine/superstition

“It's kind of gross, but I always take a pregame bathroom trip. Put pads on and go take a dump. It relaxes you. I'm not the most religious person, but I listen to Kurt Franklin's song 'Something about Jesus'. It gets me hyped for some reason.”

At least he is thinking ahead vs this genius that had issues during the game

May have hurt it during the season or amybe even during workouts prior to getting to campus. Depending on the percentage of the tear, he may not require surgery.

Developmental player that more than likely wouldn't compete for 3 years out. Players like him can't afford injuries if they expect to remain on team. Feel bad for him.

Yeah, that's where my concern lies. A developmental player not getting a chance to develop for nearly a year can more or less end any chance of him ever seeing the field.

Hopefully it's not that bad and he is able to quickly get back on track.

he'll have to have surgery. I've tore mine twice plus tore my LCL, IT band, lateral meniscus, and biceps femoris. All of the posterolateral corner damage came from me holding off on surgery because my ACL graft was loose but wasn't torn. My knee was so loose that it caused damage to the posterolateral corner. So in February I had to have ACL revision (2nd reconstruction) plus posterolateral corner reconstruction, and lateral meniscus repair. I know from experience. It's best to go ahead and have the surgery instead of waiting it out because its going to end up with surgery anyway 9 times out of 10. Ligaments do a very poor job of healing. I don't know how any player can even come back and play at the level they were before with an ACL reconstruction. Worst surgery and recovery in this world, wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

Agreed. I think they would have landed Concliffe if they had stayed patient during that final week.

IIRC in one of Butler's interviews he mentioned talking to Butch in January about why they passed on a highly rated guy and Butch talked to him about that player not fitting the culture they want in their locker room. I kinda assumed it was in regards to Conliffe since he was they only highly rated guy we really passed on on last cycle.

Either way, Thaxton already having an injury like this is a big blow for his future. I'd started to really come around on him in regards to his upside 2-3 years down the line. Losing year one will definitely make things tougher for him, especially if we hit on some of the DEs we're after in this class and Bumphus ends up at DE eventually.
