'17 VA DE Ryan Thaxton (UT signee)

It was suggested when I first started posting. :) The traditional RF insult. . . I believe it was Butchna who was the first to give me a hard time.

Butchna is always messing with someone. My mom always told me to ignore inappropriate behavior. :).

Your numbers may be right Jimmy was adamant that there were no back counts.

Dooleyesque recruit.

Tennessee beat out perennial powerhouses Army, Air Force, Coastal Carolina, Delaware, Rutgers, etc. for this recruit.

Butch Jones is playing chess while everybody else is playing football.

THIS is how you close strong.

To be fair, I would pick Tenn too. 😔

I hate to put it this way, but Coach Shoot needs intelligent kids for his defense to reach its max potential, or coaches that can simplify things for their positional players. This explains this commit and also is why the new DB coaching hire is huge.

not sure why people think Jimmy is wrong here.

ok yes I know why, cause it's Jimmy...

but Butch can't pull back-counted scholarships out of his anus....as far as I know we maxxed out how many we could backcount last yr when we took M. McDaniel...maybe Larry can clear this up?

Only way to break the newbies down. They start out all confident and full of self esteem and they never shut up. :pinch: I saw promise, so I took it easy on you. :hi:

Can anyone help me understand letting Lawson walk and taking a commitment from Thaxton? Just trying to process this correctly

Maybe Stripling saw something he didn't like about Lawson. Maybe he saw something he liked about Thaxton. Either way I never will question Stripling, he know what he is doing.

I'm pretty sure Callahan said that the staff saw Lawson as a future DT and thought Thaxton was more of a true DE as well.

Whatever the reasoning is, we'll see how it pans out one way or another.

Just looking at their highlights, I thought Thaxton looked like the better player. But guys who get paid a hell of a lot more than me really like Lawson, so we'll see.

And I've just been vindicated for calling you the smartest poster on this board...chick or no. :salute:

If this is the case it makes sense. Probably not getting Ray and Conliffe will be a DT more than likely.

Saw someone mention that FSU might like Lawson as a future OT. Maybe we saw the same future but didn't want to take another Oline.

FTR that was me and was pure speculation. Looks like he has an OT frame and I wasn't impressed by his defensive highlights really.

But honestly, my thoughts on prospects don't mean much. I thought Barnett would end up being a 280-290 lb DT when we signed him lol

To be fair. He probably would have been really good there too.

Thaxton has spent the past four months working out with Sean Washington, a former defensive back at Rutgers who has been training athletes for 20 years.

Washington is the owner-operator of the “Monster Maker Educational and Athletic Center” in Marlow Heights, Md., about 20 minutes from Thaxton’s home in Alexandria, Va.

Thaxton is now 6-5, 245, having added 15 pounds of muscle though his four months at Monster Maker.

When he came to Tennessee for the Orange and White Game on April 22, Vols’ coaches noticed how much he had changed since taking his official visit in January.

“Ryan’s an under-the-radar type of player who has great length,” Vols defensive coordinator Bob Shoop said. “His best football is ahead of him.”

I hope he turns out to be a solid contributor, you could see he had good size and length but man he didn't look at all athletic on his HS tape.
